If it is chemicals in the airbag deployment it will fall back on the airbag manufacturer to pay the recall costs. Sounds like another Takata air bag fiasco.

view forum post
_________________
24MY D300 Dynamic SE, Fuji White, Deployable Towbar, full size spare.

A member of my family works at JLR powertrain development and they have told me it is something to do with chemicals used within the air bag deployment. These chemicals are showing to be unstable in that sometimes a deployment fails to have sufficient energy to work correctly or the other extreme - they go off like a bomb with too much energy.

Interesting update:

I dropped my car off at the dealer's this morning to have a minor oil leak fixed. Apparently it's also getting a new airbag module. I think they said the diver's side but then digressed in to talking about the passenger side on other vehicles (previous Evoque recall??).

There IS a recall in the UK. The dealers have been told to start doing vehicles as they come in for other reasons and there is going to be a letter going out to owners...

view forum post
_________________
MY2026 D5 Metropolitan D350 - finally arrived after the cyber attack.

This sounds preventive vs reactive. Land Rover puts millions of miles on their test fleets. Sometimes vehicles need to age before problems become evident - it could be that there is some premature wear item that is only now becoming noticeable.

In the US, the spectre of the Takata airbag recall resulting from people literally having their throats slashed with shrapnel when airbags went off hangs heavy, so any automaker would want to get way ahead of any risk, especially JLR...

view forum post
I think the phrase used was 'no recorded instances of airbags failing to deploy'. It doesn't mean it's not a safety issue...it's certainly enough of a concern that a safety recall has been initiated by Land Rover across a wide range of their top selling vehicles in the US.

For it to become serious enough for a mass recall means the issue has been detected on several vehicles across the entire Land Rover range of models using the same part or system. The key phrase in all of this is '...discovered during internal engineer testing...'

Why wasn't the testing done before the issue became a mass recall on cars already sold to customers...like during the assembly process and before they left the factory?

I attended the 'Landys on the Lawn' event at Hatfield House on Sunday 21st June in my 2017 D5 with my sons in a 2006 D3 and at 2010 110 and my wife, daughter in law and seven of our grand children.

There were around 90-100 Land Rovers there ranging from early series, old school defenders, classic range rovers, discoveries (mostly 2's, only one disco 1), P 38s, L322, an Evoque, a Freelander and a couple of new Defender 110s and 80s and a 2025 plate D5.

It's a bit outside of nesting season so it's unlikely it's material gathering or a mating ritual. Mating is winter or early springtime, nesting is April or early May.

An old farmers trick to stop crows pecking at black silage bales...anything bright yellow. We paint yellow crosses on our silage bales, crows and seagulls tend to steer clear (no idea why, but it seems to work). A yellow kids pennant on a springy mount or yellow paper/plastic streamers attached to the roof bars...

view forum post
Couple of thoughts:

1.. He may be reacting to his reflection.
Perhaps leave a largish mirror nearby, see if he reacts more to that?
(By largish I mean large enough to distract him from the car)

2.. If it's nesting material he is after, leave some stuff nearby as well.
Bits of straw, small bits of coloured cloth, bits of paper etc.

3.. don't underestimate the power of explosives!!!

view forum post
I found the key with the updates - to make them work first time - is when they are offered, don't hit the button which says do it now, but schedule it for later on. Even 30 mins later. Every time I've scheduled the updates, they've worked. Whenever I said do it now, I've had a less than 50% success rate.

view forum post
_________________
MY23.5 D5 3.0 MHEV Metropolitan Edition – Santorini Black – Ebony Windsor Leather – 21” Style 5025 gloss black wheels – 21” full size spare tyre – Black roof rails – Black side mouldings - Williams Ceramic Coat.
