Practicalities of 2 litre versus 3 litre

My current D4 is a TD6 and it pulls our 8 metre caravan like a dream. It also has the guts to be able to accelerate with the van on the back as well as most cars without towing and therefore is very safe when entering overtaking moves.

We have now placed our order for a D5 3 litre diesel on the expectation that performance will be even better due to the lesser weight of the car. However, Mrs PDES questioned the logic of choosing the 3 litre over the 2 litre when the power specs are fairly similar.

We have had the benefit of using the 2 litre engine in the Evoque as this was Mrs. PDES's car before we traded it in this week as part of the D5 deal but we never towed with it.

So, could the wife be asking a very pertinent question? I cant get my head around how good the 2 liter would be in towing a very large caravan.

Can any one explain what the practical differences in performance would feel like?

    Cheers

It will pull it but have to work harder to do it. For me though the figures of the 2.0 ain't that spectacular compared to the 3.0 and come April the VED will be the same.

Have driven 2.0 (240 bhp / 500 Nm) and 3.0 (260 bhp / 600 Nm) L494 (RRS) and I'm happy with the fact I've gone for a 2.0. Not towing so doesn't help you completely Whistle

The question should be why are we only getting 260 PS from the 3.0? It's capable of over 300.

Keeps emissions down I suppose, but will certainly leave room for after-market tuners.
