Registration plates - that 'EU' symbol & cherished transfers

Two quick questions, if I may:

    1. New D5 due towards the end of September and just wondered about reg plates. Current D4 has the GB identifier under the EU flag symbol in the corner of the reg plate front and back, as many cars do. I'm guessing once Brexit happens next year, we won't be in the EU (or will we!) - so shall I ask the dealer to fit a standard reg plate without the EU symbol?

Can't think when I last saw a new car and checked its reg - what are dealers fitting in the main? Are new cars still being delivered as if we're all remaining in the EU forever...

    2. Also - I have a cherished plate to take off in advance and I went to do it online, The DVLA warns the transfer will take place immediately upon payment online, so does that mean at that stage the cherished plate becomes available for the dealer to reassign to the new vehicle? I'd thought I'd need to do it 2-3 weeks ahead to allow for paperwork to come through etc (and allowing for delays), but perhaps not anymore? Anyone with experience of moving private plates around recently, your help would be appreciated.

Can’t answer no.1 really Rolling Eyes

But ref taking personal plate off, when you do it yes it’s instant your supposed to put old number or one they supply straight away back on to vehicle of course telling your insurance about change of reg
On the paper work you can print off will be retention cert number you can use this to re a sign your personal plate or wait two or three days for cert to arrive in post then give that to dealer to do registration on your car Thumbs Up
Exactly what I did when I picked my new one up on 1st March, popped in couple days before and gave them retention cert 5 mins later all done Very Happy

    Hope that help Thumbs Up

New car on 21/08, from Guy Salmon had the Euro star bit on the number plate.

I also had a number plate placed on retention. It was immediate and so was the ability to transfer it straight away, however until you actually own the vehicle it’s going on, you can’t transfer it.

I also happend to ask a Solicitor how long you had to change the number on the old car. He said you had 7 days from when you received the new log book unless the old number was transferred earlier.

Thank you - that's really useful info on the transfer of the plates...

Just need to decide if I want that Euro flag on my car or not I suppose - useful for a day trip I'm planning to Bruges with the family in October, but beyond that... Rolling Eyes

I personally don’t like the euro plate, but for £20-£30 I could change if it annoys me to that extent.

I also prefer a smaller plate for the rear, but LR policy is for a larger plate at the back so I’ve been told.

Digressing a bit but still on topic.
Cars 6 months old next week so looking to put on the private reg. (Don't want the posh neighbours thinking we have an old car) Laughing
Anyway I have been offered decent money for the original 18 reg plate which came with the car. Luckily got to pick the reg and the one that caught my eye seems to have payed off.
Never sold a cars original reg before, as when taking personal ones off, the cars always reverted to the original plate.
How will this work as planning to cash in on the original reg, next week, but when I take personal reg off in a few years time, will the car be given a brand new reg, or will I loose out on the personal reg? Rolling Eyes

I voted yes to stay in Europe, but I haven’t ever had the euro stars on my reg plate because I never plan to drive my car in Europe.

Road Runner, you’d need to place the original plate on retention - £80. You’d then be given a certificate so you could put it on another car or sell. The vehicle would then be allocated another number consummate with the age and location of your original purchase. Easy peasey.

Chalkey, I agree with you, but personally I don’t like the plate because it introduces another colour into the equation, albeit it’s only an insignificant bit of blue.

    Thanks Dangerdave.

I do know that there is an £80 fee for having the original one put on retention for selling on.

I wasn't sure if, when coming to sell the vehicle that I would loose the private reg, as I have never juggled the plates like this before. Wasn't sure if they would allocate a new registration, after taking the private one off, hence wanted to make sure and get some advice.

Didn't fancy loosing it after having it for the last 15 years. It's value has nearly doubled since we purchased it.

Thanks for the clarification Thumbs Up

The first thing I did was change my plates from the ones supplied by the dealer on delivery of my new D5 in April.
It was supplied with a plate with just the VRN so I ordered a new one with the GB and Union flag to the left of it and written below the VRN is now "Don't hurry me, I am retired"
If anybody drives close enough to read the small print then I am in trouble Sad

Much easier than it used to be. It can be done instantly online at the dealers. Just tell them in advance what the reg will be so they can have the plates already on the car. Insurance companies vary so I usually take the free 7 day cover from JLR for registration purposes as you need insurance cover to register the vehicle. I also tell my own insurers that there will be a change of vehicle at a particular date/time and that I will be keeping the same registration number.

If you want to do it ahead of time no problem, just put your own reg on retention and give the dealer the retention certificate. Unfortunately, if you don't do that far enough ahead you won't have the new V5 for your old car to tell DVLA you've sold it. No problem with that but the Vehicle Excise Duty won't cancel until you inform DVLA it is sold - which needs the V5 with the reg and code number on it.

So, you can get the dealer to do it all for you on the day, easy but you lose a months tax OR you do it early enough and buy some new number plates as you will need more than the 7 days of running around on the wrong plates (I was told you had to change the plates/inform insurance company within 48 hours but that could be wrong).

Either way is going to cost you money. My insurer charges for changes like that so it was cheaper to let the thieving b******s at the DVLA have their extra month of VED but that really hurt!
