    Dealer or independant service

    What are peoples thoughts on this? My D5 is coming upto 4 years old and has 56,000 miles. It has extended warranty on it at the moment and I was inclined to renew that again.

    Local main dealer orginally quoted £736 inc VAT. Has now come down to £540 inc VAT plus £15 for a courtesy car (they used to collect and return but don't offer that now). Next closest main dealer £517 inc VAT.

    Local specialist independant £505 inc VAT. I spoke to him about it because I was suprised the difference wasn't bigger and he said it is quite a big service and the difference is they do it throughly whilst some main dealers tick the boxes but that is about it. I know he would say that but I think there is some truth to it.

    The vehicle is likely to stay in the family for a few more years, so I am not worried about residual value of main dealer service history. It is more important to me that it is done properly and I believe if genuine parts are used it shouldn't effect the extended warranty (although maybe makes it more difficult to prove).

    What should I do? Logic says go to the other main dealer but it isn't very convenient. Or go to local main dealer but they have annoyed me that they quoted £200 too much in the first place!

    So I am tempted to go independant, it is much more convenient, but the saving really isn't that much!

    Who's to know which one will give the best service. However, if you should have a problem with your car further down the line. (Yes, I know it's highly unlikely Whistle but stay with me) and need a good will contribution from LR, they will probably look more favourable on you if you have stuck with the brand. Just my thoughts. It's not like you are saving a great deal going elsewhere, just less convenient.

    Considering the smal differnec between dealer and indy price its a no brainer and as Craigp says, if later on you need the suport of your dealer, you're more likely to get it if you have contributed to his profits. As regards properly carrying out the service, there's probably more chance of your dealer doing it properly than a non specialist multi make indy. I understand dealers are monitored re their stock by JLR.

    I would be very careful whoever services it. In my experience even the dealers dont do it properly.
    In my last 24k mile service none of the air filters were changed. I only knew this because I wrote the date on them when new. The dealer changed them when I complained but did not give a reason why they were not changed. I just hope they did the oil !

    My local Indy charges £120 less than the dealer for servicing. Mainly due to the dealer charging £130/hour labour and the Indy charging £50/ hour …and I trust them to do what’s necessary within the price.

    There are two scenarios that make me feel nervous with this Indy decision.

    As others have said, if something goes wrong under extended warranty, there is a chance that a goodwill gesture repair might not be forthcoming due to a ‘lack of loyalty’ to the dealership. However in my experience that’s down to how you deal with the people at the vendor dealership. I’ve had goodwill repairs and even a extensive none standard modification sanctioned by JLR (which is imminent), despite my warranty running out almost 2 years ago and not using them for servicing since the pandemic started.

    The other situation is when a complicated repair is required out of warranty. Dealerships quote a scale of charges for repair jobs and that’s what it will cost….even if the repair goes pear shaped. I had an instance with my D4 when my Indy guy said ‘take it to the dealership”. He explained that the last time they had to do this job it took 3 days with engine out to fix the problem and the customers bill was an embarrassing £3000. The dealership however quote £800 for the job that should take half a day. His comment was ‘if it took them 3 days…it’s still £800”.
