The screw-in recovery loop is only used if you have the deployable tow bar. For all other D5s with the removable towbar or no towbar, the whole panel is removed to expose a proper recovery point.

The screw-in loops are generally considered dangerous for off-road recovery, especially "snatch" recoveries using a kinetic rope when only recovery points securely welded to the chassis should be used.
For a gentle pull along smooth tarmac (e.g. after a breakdown) they are ok.

I confess I’ve just used my deployable tow bar on some specific occasions.
We have a long unmade lane that skirts our property enabling cars (not lorry) access to the rear garden.
Whenever we have a pallet delivery I get them offloaded at the lane head and rope the pallet to the towbar. Then with my best re-enactment of Ben-Hurs chariot race, the pallet and contents are dragged down the lane ….much to the amusement of any passers-by.
It also serves to periodically even out wheel ruts and irregularities in the lane.
