Phenomenal range from new 3.0 MHEV diesel engine

This has kind of blown me away in comparison to my old Discovery...

Went to visit some my brother-in-law's family on holiday in Cornwall yesterday, just for the day. Brimmed the tank Friday night, and it showed a range of 550 miles. We covered 444.3 miles in total yesterday, there and back. We went M25/M3/A303 etc, so mix of motorway and A-roads. Weren't pushing too hard, normally up to around 5mph over the actual speed limit for each road.

Remaining range upon pulling into home at 11.30pm last night was 254 miles, and the fuel gauge showing this much remaining visually:

Fag packet maths is suggesting 444 + 254 could mean a total range of 698 miles.

Fuel economy for the journey there & back was 37.3mpg.

I would sometimes get 500 miles on a very good run with my MY2019, but this seems a huge improvement.

Is this comparable with others for the mild hybrid 3.0 litre diesel?

Trip to Spain in 2023 3.0 Diesel MHEV - achieved similar MPG (according to the car display - didn't calculate the actual). Again - driving at a couple of miles or so above the limit.
I had expected it to be worse than the 2018 2.0 Diesel so pleasantly surprised.

Agree my mpg has definitely improved. I have just travelled from Mid Wales to the Cotswolds and I averaged 38 to the gallon. Very happy with that.

My last D5 MY21 with straight 6 MHEV car and often got 37+and saw 42 on a couple of occasions. The car had covered 18000 and economy really improved from 10000. My new MY23.5 with 800 miles on is already showing mid 30's Smile

Pretty much identical figures that I've had over nearly 6,000 miles.

I so much want this engine in the US. Very jealous we don't get it here. Thanks, Volkswagen.... Mad

Not been in the US since 2019 and can't remember... how easily accessible is diesel fuel (sorry, gas!) on retail forecourts State-side? If you could get this engine, could you fuel it easily?

This car continued to impress in abundance.

When I did Cornwall and back in a day in July, starting from a full tank it was 444 miles there, and the range showed 254 miles remaining when I pulled back into my driveway that night. Fag packet maths suggests a possible range of 698miles.

Today I did Lancashire and back. 485 miles there & back, and the range showed 263 miles when I got back home. Quick maths again, suggests a possible range of 748 miles.

This is just bonkers. I never got ANYWHERE near that with my Sept 2018 D5. I might sometimes have got just over 500 on a VERY good run...

Today averaged, on the dash, 40.0mpg exactly. Incredible!

2018 2lt. I generally get this or better. Not bad considering my average speed.

I wouldn't blame it entirely on VW, the US has had this weird perception with consumer diesels for a while that I just don't understand. I think the market for commercial trucks with diesels is still pretty solid.

I miss the highway mileage of my 2017 D5 with the TD6. Sad

Absolutely. I fuel my 2017 Td6 regularly. Diesel pickups are a dime a dozen here, diesel is at every filling station, and at least in my state diesel is actually cheaper than premium petrol, sometimes cheaper than regular.

And gas is petrol...diesel is diesel Wink

In the west, pickups are almost all diesel, especially anything larger than a quarter-ton, which refers to payload.

VW was going gangbusters on their little diesels until they got caught cheating. But yes, passenger vehicle diesel cars suffered from image issues from the malaise era Oldsmobiles and rattletrap Volvo 240D's and Mercs driven by elbow-patched socialist professorial types.

Thanks DieselRanger... it's a while since I've been in the US. Used to be a fortnight at least annually, sometimes two trips, but then Covid arrived and curtailed further visits, and then my small people began costing me too much, so it's been UK/European holidays only since then.

CO is wonderful. So many amazing memories of time in your State. And I'm very jealous you get to drive a D5 there, it would be the perfect car.

Some of my best times in CO have been, well, taking the I-70 west from Denver into Utah. Probably the most impressive stretch of road I've ever driven. And then other fave stops being Durango (several times), Telluride (love the strapline for the airport there - so clever!), Ouray, Silverton... I could go on. You're very luck to live there!
