    choices we have to make

    Hi there……
    My name is Piet, I’am from holland, sorry!
    Ha ha at least we have the steering wheel on the right side😜😜
    We think……..

    I’am driving a Volvo XC60 T5 and there nothing wrong with it.
    Nice car, tows the caravan, 1900kg, perfect and easy on al fronts.
    Even in the mountains in Switzerland and France.
    But……..its not the FFRR I had before.

    Wel I began my car life with Mini’s, the original ones, Alfa’s and BMW’s and so on, and the later Mini’s, then a lot LR’s. Series IIa, Classic RR’s, P38, Discovery’s and FFRR tree times.

    When I retired I recon and thought I cant afore the FFRR 4.2 SC anymore and trade her in for the Volvo. That was a mistake. It was the most nice and beautiful car I ever had. Ahh well…. And now, after a year or so I know….heh…. I can have and pay for a LR. Pffff. Oké too late for the SC but…

    I’am now thinking about a Disco 5.

    Here in Holland road-tax for a diesel is sky high and a diesel is thus not an option, only, maybe, if you drive a lot of miles which I do not.
    Roughly €2000/year.
    So…….Si4 or Si6 are the engines to choose out over here for me.
    Witch one is the best, al so for the towing. Both have +/- 300 hp.
    As far as I understand, except the cilinders, the gearboxes are different…..correct?

    So I have to make up my mint which one to choose…….
    About building year 2018
    Si4 2.0 with a automatic sequential gearbox. Or….
    Si6 3.0 with a “classic” ZF 8 speed box

    Ah wel……the choices of luxury……..🤷‍♂️☺️

    I think the vast majority sold in the UK are diesel, so probably not too much direct experience among most users here of the engines you mention.

    My own thoughts, based on not much knowledge, would be that the six cylinder unit with ZF box would be a more relaxed and less stressed choice to go for, especially as you plan to be towing, and I think suits the character of the car more.

    Maybe a test drive of both would help make the choice too. Good luck in the search!

    Both SI4 & SI6 are fitted with conventional ZF 8HP gearboxes, there is no sequential gearbox on these cars.

    I have an SI 6. An ‘elephant on steroids’ gives superb performance but at a cost in fuel use.

    When used around town it struggles to get 20mpg. Even on long runs it rarely hits 30mpg. Towing 1800kg caravan (last week) …17mpg. We seriously dont notice the trailer behind apart from the dip in fuel economy…...its a superb tug.

    I don’t do a lot of mileage in it so the petrol pain is bearable.

    Insurance is a bit high too.

    That’s said it’s a lovely car to drive. I was hoping (and hanging on before changing to see if) JLR would bring out a petrol hybrid Discover, but that idea seems to have faded.

    Coincidentally I was a long term Volvo driver until switching to Discover 4 then 5. I am still considering an XC 90 but the space inside the cab seems a bit claustrophobic compared to the space and headroom of a Discovery.

    I haven’t tried and SI4 …..but the 2 litre diesel seems sluggish compared to the 3 litre diesel …..so I might postulate that the petrol models could possibly be similarly compared?

    thanks for your reactions. I really appreciate it. Diesel is not an option here in Holland if you don't drive much miles.
    I thought I read somewhere that the 2.0Si4 would have a sequential automatic. Great...not so.
    And as for consumption, I know what a 4.2SC FFRR consumes 🫣

    I would avoid 4 cylinder models, I don't think they are up to the weight of the car even without a caravan attached. The 4 cylinder diesels in the UK have a reputation for breaking the engine. If you can stretch to it I would recommend one of the facelifted D5's with the straight six petrol Ingenium, the P360 which has better fuel consumption than the 4 cylinder variants which tells you it's much less stressed.

    The only thing to look out for on the facelifted D5 is that the lo-range box became an option instead of standard fit. It's likely that one with the deployable towbar also had the towing pack, which would include the lo-range box, but you don't have to have it and can just specify the towbar on its own. Also Pivi on the facelift models is streets ahead of the older InControl system.

    Hi Ian and thanks for your reaction. I really appreciate it.
    But……..I'm talking about the petrol models. The diesels,
    here in Holland, are only sensible if I drive more than 20,000
    miles a year and I easily don't get that.
    So……I'm looking at a 2.0 - 4 cyl or a 3.0 - v6 "petrol"
    My XC60 T5 has 250hp and that is sufficient so the 300
    of a Disco should also work.
    A P300 is financially not an option🫣 much too expensive for me here
    in Holland.
    😜I'm just a normal guy who wants to drive a waaaaay too expensive car😜
    luckily I can maintain them myself, otherwise…
    The V6SC will be the best, but I'm curious about the 2.0Si.
    But there won't be much experience in the UK I understand.
    My last DIY repair was the timing on my FFRR 4.2SC as you can see on
    the picture below…..
