    Looking for used buying advice

    Hi

I’m new to the forum and am about to buy my first Disco 5 after owning an RRS, which we love but we need a more practical car for two dogs.

I am looking at two used discos and would welcome thoughts and opinions on which one to go for.

    2018 (18 ) HSE 3.0 TDV6 in Santorini Black - cream leather interior
2019 (69) Landmark 3.0 SD6 in Indus Silver with black pack - black leather interior

Both have low and similar mileage for their age - the 2019 is £5000 more and is 18 months newer.

Interested in opinions on engine and trim level comparison and thoughts on desirability.

    Thank you in advance!!

Personally, I'd go with the black leather trim on the '19 plate Landmark, especially if it has the black roof lining to go with it...as a farmer, the cream bare-bum coloured leather seats were never practical...Being a landmark model, it *should* have all the end of line (pre 2020 facelift) optional extras fitted as well.

Besides that, there's not much to pick from between those 2 apart from the price and the age so it's mostly down to personal preferences. Perhaps compare the service and MOT history's if that interests you (check for any fails and advisories on the MOT history)... as I mentioned, I'd prefer the Indus silver with the black pack...but that's just my own personal aesthetics.

Coming from a Carpathian grey '15 plate SDV6 HSE D4, I went for my '17 plate TD6 HSE D5 since it ticked all my boxes with mileage, trim and equipment levels I was looking for (it has practically every factory fitted optional package available at the time except for an electrically deployable towhook)...had a good service history and clean MOT's throughout and especially having the black roof lining, black leather, side steps...and my wife demanded a centre cubby box cooler since we had one in the D4 Laughing

I was torn between 3 possibles at the time, all similar price and mileage, all located in deepest Englandshire which meant either a very long trip to view and buy or a remote sales process which isn't for the faint of heart... a pair of very nice '18 plate SDV6 HSE Lux's, one Indus silver, one Carpathian grey and the Fuji white '17 plate TD6 HSE that won out in the end...the deciding factors being that I have a mild dislike of full digital dashboards (mine has analogue speedo and tacho) and I really didn't need rear seat entertainment...

The final decider, the dealer was extremely patient with my demands for detailed live video walkarounds during the remote sales process, stuck a fresh MOT on it and agreed to deliver it from the Midlands to Aberdeen free of charge. Can't ask for more than that...

Get insurance quotes, you may find the older one is significantly more difficult to insure due to the cut-off for retrofitting of security improvements.

Is that really a thing? I had no mention of it from any insurer when I went fishing for renewal quotes in February...or perhaps it's just not applicable or relevant for my geographical postcode?

When I bought my '17 plate D5 last November, I just transferred it onto my then current policy I had for the D4...I had to pay £50 for the changeover on the remaining term for the policy... which I renewed end of February like I mentioned.

I know from a recent thread on this forum about the option of LR's own pay-as-you-go insurance, I was really taken aback by some of the renewal quotes mentioned by others since none of the quotes I got from any of the major high street insurers was over £500 fully comp with a couple (Tesco and Admiral) being under £400 Shocked

Taking an average from all the quotes I was offered, insuring the D5 worked out roughly £75-£100 more expensive annually fully comp than the D4 in my case...

Wasn't there an issue that some of the very early models only had 3G connectivity, and not 4G, and that is going to be fully switched off in the UK at the end of '25. Or have I dreamt this up?

My early '17 D5 (first registered April 2017) has 4G connectivity, tells me in the top corner of the infotainment screen.

It might be taking the 4G from my phone... or whether it was an additional optional extra or not when it was initially ordered, I have no idea... The car automatically connects to my phone when I jump in it, I have a Bluetooth dongle fitted in the centre cubby box USB socket rather than be limited to the wired Android Auto connection available on the pre-facelift models.

To be fair, if I want connectivity, navigation or an onboard internet connection, I invariably use my phone via Android Auto and have the car use the phone as a mobile hotspot rather than use the onboard software since I can have a 5G connection once off the island. The only minor downside is that by using Google maps rather than the onboard SatNav, I don't get the navigation indicators on my HUD....apart from that though, the HUD works as normal.

My 2015 D4 was 3G I think, can't really remember since I used Android Auto on that as well rather than the onboard software for connectivity...
