The models were made by a local artsy-crafty guy from up the north end of the island, he gives them a fresh coat of paint every year and parks them on the verge outside his house during the tourist season.
He lives on the main road (yes, that narrow, sand blown track counts as a main road up here) so R2 and 3PO get plenty of views from tourists heading a bit further up the island to the lighthouse or what little remains of the WW1 German destroyer wreck. Apologies for the finger in the lens
I had just stopped by that day for a cuppa and a blether and realised in all the years they've been there, I'd never taken a snap of them. Plenty of photos of everything else from mass pilot whale beachings, family pods of Orcas swimming around in the harbour, Viking boat burials or prehistoric standing stones to fill several albums... but not the Star wars ornaments.
There's only around 500 of us live on the island as permanent residents and we all kinda know each other...so plenty of excuses for tea and biccie stops to catch up on the local gossip
I always wonder how many tourists, historians and archaeologists from around the world who often visit this rather remote island to explore it's 5,500 years of human history have taken photos of that pair of 1970's movie era droids over the years...
