From what I can gather...as a paid app and service, it's pretty poor with many reporting the issues you've mentioned.
I had a look into it after I bought the D5 but like the onboard software, LR wanted me to pay £80 to have the previous owner's details removed so I could activate and start my own account...which again I had to pay a yearly sub for the privilege.
It's not useful or reliable enough for me to be honest, even if it were free. I have a remote Webasto FBH fitted so don't need the remote start in the winter...and I don't lock my car that often for it to remind me the car's unlocked, I don't even take the keys out of it except to change the fob battery if I'm honest since we live on a small rock in the middle of the north sea where there's zero crime.
Besides the app functions and the onboard LR software which some folk find useful, I tend to use either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay for apps, maps and entertainment rather than the bog standard LR onboard stuff. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are free...LR onboard software isn't. I'm not tight with the pennies or anything...if it were essential or I couldn't live without it, I'd have it.
Saying that, the Disco is mine, it's paid for so I'm damned if I'm going to rent software from Land Rover like a Netflix subscription
Your mileage may vary...if it's useful (and works) it's perfectly fine. But a quick look through your dash menu will give you a rough idea on tyre pressures and most stuff that's useful information...it's certainly not hard to remember to lock your car if you park at Tesco without a phone app to remind you...I'm not that old yet...even if I rarely lock it when I'm on the island.

Great counter points as usual Jon
The range for the FBH remote fob is over 100 feet...I can start the FBH lying in my bed without even having to look out of the window...so it's not that short a range and doesn't rely on line of sight to the car.
If I had to use the timed climate settings from the centre screen...I'd probably entertain the idea of paying for phone app to use the remote start... so there is that

The main times I use the app are when I'm walking back to the car and will arrive in 15-20 minutes e.g. walking the dog on a vet hot/cold day or sometimes when getting the bags at the airport in winter when the car will be iced up. The remote fob definitely doesn't work over that range...I've tried it

NOTES
Do not touch the antenna when pressing the Power or OFF buttons.
The remote control has a range of about 100 m. You do not need to point the remote control at the vehicle.
Hold down the Power button for about two seconds.
The green LED lights up to confirm that the timed climate control system has been started. The LED flashes every two seconds to indicate that the timed climate system is activated.
The remote climate program continues for 20-30 minutes and is then switched off automatically to prevent discharging of the vehicle battery. The remote timed climate program shuts off automatically if the engine is started.

Yes, my remote works, but not from 1km away inside a building or with a hill between me an the car,
I have the choice, I can fire up the FBH with the remote if I'm close enough to the car or start the engine with the App if I'm anywhere with a phone signal and will get back top the car within 30 minutes (the engine stops again after 30 minutes).

What I don't understand though is the logic that when you get back to the car after staring the engine remotely, if you open a door, the engine keeps running and you press the brake pedal and everything comes alive and you drive off..... BUT if you open the boot first, the engine stops and everything shuts down. Why

Very true...and not everyone is lucky enough to have the FBH remote fob in the first place since it's an optional extra.
I'm certainly not decrying anyone who uses the In Control app or it's usefulness as you described...but for me having bought a previously owned Discovery, it didn't have enough of a use for me to pay Land Rover to delete the previous owners account details and additionally expect me to pay an exorbitant annual subscription to use it. My Disco is 8 years old...and still Land Rover are trying to fleece money out of me.
I installed the app on my phone in anticipation last November just before I bought the Disco, I just can't use it for that reason. Land Rover won't budge on insisting I pay the additional cost just to have the software account registration transferred to me...I won't budge on them expecting me to pay an extra £80-£100 purely to have the privilege of renting their overly expensive software for a Discovery I already own outright.
I have absolutely no objection to registering or paying the annual subscription...but locking access to any subscription service behind a further paywall which can only be removed (at cost) via a telephone or personal application to a registered Land Rover main dealership is completely ridiculous

I'm sure you can reprogram the remotes...my D5 came with one which I was chuffed about as I passed my old one on with the D4 when I sold it.
I'll see what I can dig up on programming the Webasto remotes...can't be that hard, surely...since you can buy replacement OEM remotes readily on Ebay
From what I found on the web...
Programming Telestart Transmitter:
1. Place batteries into the battery compartment of the transmitter.
2. Remove fuse from the heater's fuse holder.
3. Wait at least 5 seconds.
4. Replace fuse in heaters fuse holder and within 5 seconds press the OFF
button on the transmitter for at least 1 second.
5. Learning is completed.
A second or third hand-held transmitter can be programmed in the same manner.
NOTE:
The learning process can be repeated as often as necessary. The oldest transmitter will be deleted each time.

Always possible that the previous owner took the fob off their keyring and shoved it in a kitchen drawer of course, but it didn't always follow that it came with a remote, even if there was a Webasto heater fitted, the remote fob was an additional optional extra (or at least it used to be on earlier D5's), not the heater in most cases as I've read posts on here from owners with an FBH and timed climate options on the centre screen but no remote fob... the FBH was almost always a standard fitted component, especially on higher spec models.
The easiest way to check is to look for the 'timed climate' option on your centre screen settings. If they're there, there's a Webasto heater fitted. No idea if that means you can program a remote for it like you could on the D4...but from what I can gather from elsewhere around the LR discussion forums, you can.
Won't do any harm to try in any case. You'd just have to find the fuse for the Webasto heater in the fusebox behind the glove compartment in order to try it. Might be fuse 1A...don't quote me on that though, I haven't looked myself -
