    Towing breakaway cable

    Hi
Having towed the last 35 years with a fixed tow bar, I now have a removable swan neck tow ball, for those that have been using this swan neck where does the breakaway cable attach too?

Leaving aside the “old” method of looping it around the towball.

I have the deployable sort which may not be relevant but there is a loop to latch the brake cable to the left of the towball when deployed. It’s really annoyingly high up under the bumper skirt so I missed it for a couple of trips when I first had the towbar fitted.

The reason I mention it is I don’t know if it’s part of the deployable kit only or whether it part of the actual JLR towbar itself. It’s invisible from the rear without getting on your knees ……but I can feel it, even when the towball isn’t deployed.

Like you, I have the removable (not electrically deployable) towhook. The attachment point for the breakaway cable is just under the tow plate trim panel on the left side of the towhook. I had to lie on the wet grass for those pics Laughing

Thats the same (ridiculously hidden) attachment position on the deployable one as well….just a different lug.

Aye, Land Rover did the same hidden under the skirt trick with the 13 pin electrical socket for the deployable towhook... which is at least a bit more readily accessible on the removable hook versions...

After only a couple of days of rain and mud covered farm roads that resemble the WWI battlefield at Passchendaele...it looks like it's time to wash the car again...although it always manages to look far dirtier in my photos than it actually is... Whistle

I do wonder if the designers ever get a mock up of these attachments and actual try them out at ground level, not on a bench. I am Just about able to fit the plug and the brake hitch by ‘feel’ now.

Before that, I needed to have a spare garden kneeling pad in the car for when I hitched up. Crazy.

An inch movement down would suffice, but I suspect that who screw up their “folding” space. Fortunately it’s something I only have to do once or twice (thats two times for the younger readers) a month or I would be really peeved.

99% of us farmers on this island don't even bother connecting the electrics for dragging trailers around, no matter the size or be it behind a tractor or a D5.

There's practically zero traffic, plus they're all locals who usually jump out of their cars and open field gates for us if we're dragging balers or hoppers behind a tractor... and we've no coppers to complicate things anyway...who's going to care if the trailer lights aren't connected?

Every open residential driveway has a bit of rope tied to one gatepost so we can fasten it off when we're walking cows along the roads between pastures, stops the cunning blighters charging in and making an impromptu snack out of the pretty flowers in folks gardens... Laughing

I've just got to remember to connect the electrics when I drag a livestock trailer over on the ferry to Kirkwall though...same as remembering to take this out and actually fasten my seatbelt. It's a different world all together up here Whistle
