    Cambelt change

    Just done some research the vehicle I’m about to buy could need a cambelt it’s done 54k miles but is 2019. I’ve read it should be replaced at 7 years or 110k miles whichever is sooner 😳 ??? Is this the case

    Yes 7 years or over 100k miles whichever soonest, change the sprockets at the same time, there's a known problem with originals breaking its only abour £150 more but good insurance.

    Thanks it’s I guess an annoying expense I’d forgotten to think about and budget for. Better than the cost if it isn’t done and breaks I suppose. I’ll do some shopping around for quotes

    That sounds cheap, are they doing the camshaft pulleys (cogs) in that price and the rear belt.

    Rear belt is included they advised the other cogs aren’t required but I’ll check

    Its a well recognised issue withe the sprockets, enough for me to change mine, in simple tems, £120 new sprockets £12k new engine, bit of a no brainer!!!

    £850 + VAT is £1020...so around the average price from an indy garage. Prices will vary but that price is about smack in the middle.

    Whilst replacing the main camshaft pulleys is certainly a preventative measure, it's not normally required or undertaken as part of a cam belt replacement. For the camshaft pulleys to develop microfractures and run the risk of failure, there usually has to be extenuating circumstances for it to happen, either very high mileage or poor maintenance and servicing including heavy or abusive use for an extended time... Whilst the cam pulleys failing due to microfractures isn't unheard of on a 3L v6 Ford Lion engine...it is rare.

    Most garages offering timing belt replacements won't replace the main camshaft pulleys unless you ask them specifically. As Harry said, replacing both will cost an additional £150-£200 on top of the cost for the belt replacement.

    All that said, like Harry, I replaced both of the main camshaft pulleys when I replaced the timing belts on mine, I also replaced the water pump (rattly centre bearing)....but I did mine myself so the only cost was parts...and a fair few donations into the swear box.

    As long as the replacement belt kits supplied by your indy includes new idler and tensioner pulleys (it would be strange if it didn't), you'll be fine.

    Thanks the price is both belts and necessary tensioners . We’ll be towing so it’s important for the engine to be in top condition, upto 2023 it’s a full LR main dealer service history. Then non main dealer services after that. The dealer we’re buying off is also servicing it. I’m pretty clued up on vehicle maintenance in general obviously not having a Land Rover before other than Ser3 many years ago. There’s all the specifics I need to learn for the Disco
