    Towing. SD4, TdV6 or V6 petrol

    A family member is thinking about buying a D5 used,
    but we are not sure what is exactly the best option.

    Its mainly used for short trips, less then 10 miles, so I think the SD4 is a "no go zone",
    but will the TdV6 live with it..



    I think my SD4 is powerfull enough to pull 2500Kg of trailer and horses,
    if the hills are not too steep and inclines not too long..

    Questions :
    01. The TdV6 has impressive torque, but limited rev range delivering it. Does the autobox compensate ?
    02. The petrol V6 has much less torque, but HP are increasing with revving up. Isn't that better ?
    03. Do you need a fixed towbar for 2500Kg of horsebox, or will any do ?
    04. Petrol or diesel, considering short trips mostly ?

    I’d go V6 diesel for that kind of towing. They will be grateful for every bit of torque . Ten mile runs aren’t too bad, mine is being asked to live with a lot worse. Just take it for a longer run every 5-10 trips.

    For towing, torque is king. The SD6 engine is your best choice.
    All of the tow hitch options are rated for 3500Kg but nose weight varies from 100Kg to 150Kg. The electrically deployable one has the highest rating but all are suitable.
    The SD6 engine will be fine on 10 Mike journeys provided you can do most of it at 40mph or over. Mine is often doing a dpf regeneration on m way home from work which is 6 miles of 60mph road.

    Did you ever tried a V6 petrol for towing, or is that a pure performance engine
    for acceleration and topspeed ?

    2B.. you say the TDV6 has 'limited rev range' All diesels have this, its the nature of the beast, diesels generally develop torque at low revs, HGV's foe example generally max out below 2000rpm and they pull massive loads, My D5, TDV6 easily and regularly pulls 3500kg.I don't think I would ever contemplate a D5 with 2.0 litre

    @Harrythespider.

    I know diesels are limited in rev range; I had a D3 TdV6 for ten years.

    What I want to say the max torque in the TDv6 is 1700-2300 rpm , range is 600 rpm.
    The SI6 has a max torque from 3000-5300 rpm, range is 2300 rpm !!!

    Yes, torque in the SI6 is over this range only 450 nm...

    So looking from another perspective :

    in the TdV6 torque is above 450nm between 1250 - 3500 rpm, also 2350 rpm...

    I know the TdV6 is good at the job and probably consumes less fuel at-the-job also,,

    But it keeps nagging in my mind what counts more ; higher torque or more HP...

    And just to complicate things, a 2018 or earlier SD4 has 500Nm torque whereas a 2019 onwards has 440 Nm torque, both with 240bhp..

    And for towing it’s always torque is king

    I would say for any vehicle weighing 2400kg torque is king let alone whist towing. The Td6 revs nicely to 4200rpm when driven enthusiastically and sounds good doing it.....mine has been doing plenty of short trips recently, it does bring the distance to next service down a little but mine is still scheduled to be 15300 miles between.

    Have never noticed mine do a PDF regen in 40,000 miles, not s clue how I would know lol. But on the basis I have never had the DPF amber warning it seems it does them perfectly adequately.

    2023 D300 Metropolitan, Hakuba Silver, Low Range, Solar screen, Deployable towbar, FBH, sidesteps.

    Given a lot of us have come from D3’s and D4’s, the 2 ltr D5 has more bhp and equal or better (in the 500Nm version) torque than a 2.7 V6 D3 which weighed more, and we all thought that was a great tow car..

    So don’t dismiss a 2ltr, just sayin Whistle

    That was exactly my idea.

    Though I had mine remapped to 500nm and 210bhp, which was a stunning difference at the time..

    And it became 10% more economical also ! Cool

    But the family member is convinced ; tdV6 it will be !

    Simple : the x-mas tree lights up, text indicating "limb mode" ..

    After the cleaning is over, suddenly all clears. Typical for JLR... Rolling with laughter

    You can normally hear a very slight exhaust note difference when it is doing a DPD regen.

    Other than that, you probably won’t notice any difference.

    If you have a diagnostic computer, you can check the exhaust gas temperature and you will see them rise when it is doing a regen.

    If it happens during open road driving you won't notice. If it happens (or is still happening) when you are in town traffic or car park maneuvering, you'll notice a growly exhaust note (which sounds great, it's a shame it doesn't always sound like that), the stop-start will be disabled and from outside the car you'll smell a hot metal exhaust smell. You may also notice smoke wafting from the tail pipes if you stop the engine during a dpf regeneration.
