First Edition Headlights randomly coming on and off when dou

    Hi all

I noticed the other evening that our Disco First Edition has started randomly switching the headlights on and off, sometimes a flash, other times can be on for 10-30 seconds. There is an electrical burning smell in the cabin which as much as I do the sniff test I cannot locate.

Any suggestions where the headlight control module is, or other recommended suggestions to investigate?

    Thanks all

    Hi Wolfpack

When parked up, I have resorted to having it on charge overnight now as it was flattening the battery. Sitting in the car while locked last night, the BCM under the passenger side of the dash click and the headlights come on, they can stay on for a few minutes - an hour then click off. Its very very bizarre.

Speaking to a LR specialist, they hadn't heard of this issue on D5, but had seen a similar issue in a freelander which was the BCM.

Would you think swapping the BCM would help, or is it something else telling the BCM to switch the lights on. I have tried removing batteries from the car keys incase it was a fault with them, but this did not make any difference.

    Cheers

    Dipped or high beam?

I would turn off all the automatic headlight control systems first and see if it still happens. -stalk control to off, auto high beam assist off, welcome home mode off and headlight delay timer off. Can’t think of any others systems…..

If that solves it, selectively turn each system back on. Until it replicates. At least you might narrow it down to a subsystem.

I think it points to the BCM. That's what controls the lights. If they are in the off position on the stalk, and still coming on, it seems likely to be the BCM, but I suppose it could also be related to the actual switch giving a faulty headlight flash signal.

I was thinking the BCM also, Switch in the off position, locked and unlocked and the headlights only come on

    Update

This issue was caused by a VQM ( Voltage Quality Module ) which is located in the rear driver side quarter ( where the jack and wheekl brace are located )

The issue was diagnosed by Autodoc 4x4 specialists from West Brom, the repair completed within the agreed 3 days while we were away in Edinburgh. I would highly recommend these guys. professionals and not the usual throw parts at the problem approach.
