I don’t think it was a cooling fan issue,.....! The journey Home was -3C which was most probably the reason why the alternator didn’t re-charge the battery over the 30 mile journey as I was trying to turn off Front & Rear screen heaters, screens, AC etc etc.

All too much for the system.

Glad they found your issue. But, a bad thermo or failed solenoid can cause the fan to kick on even when it's not needed, which is why that particular failure is sometimes hard to diagnose....

    Parking up long term??

I see @AndrewS has left car for 3 weeks which is useful info for me.

Has anyone left their D5 for longer than 3 weeks?

I work away and car could be parked up for 6 weeks or so. So I'm concerned about long term battery drain. My Freelander 2 is fine with this, just goes into "Deep Sleep", have to do manual key open, but no battery issues.

However the Jag XK will not last much more than 2 weeks without battery drain causing spurious fault codes and warnings (known issue on XKs) - Garaged with Ctek connected 24-7 to stop these issues.

    Thanks

Battery conditioners are always a good idea if you're leaving it for that long.
