Hope someone might be able to answer a quick query.
On the front of the D5, below the number plate, there are two lower horizontal gaps presumably for air flow to radiator. These seem quite big and I would have expected an inner plastic mesh / grille to stop larger stones etc damaging the radiator. As it is, you look straight through to radiator.
Are they all like that or is something missing off mine? I've driven 4 in the last year and never noticed this before. I've only had the new one for a week.
If it makes any difference it is a 2019MY 3.0l sdv6 hse lux.
I also have on opening big enough for a bird to go straight into the intercooler. When I questioned it it does seem that with dynamic pack at least, that’s how it is. I looked at several others.
There is some variation between models though. My 3.0 TDV6 MY18 has it on the (UK) drivers side. I have seen some 2.0SD4s with the open vent on the (UK) passenger side.
So, I unexpectedly found myself near to a LR dealer and dropped in to check on their cars. Of the 4 they had, all were the same - no inner protective grille. Seems a bit of a weakness in design?
Interestingly though, 1 of the 4 had a horizontal louvre / wing in front of the radiator. The only time I have seen anything similar before was on a BMW. It closed to assist the engine warming up and then opened for cooling. Strange only 1 had this though.
I think you'll find most cars don't have any kind of protective screen to restrict airflow through the radiator. Most "screens" are purely cosmetic anyway. I've never suffered any kind of radiator damage from stones or other debris entering these areas. Unless you're off-roading at high speed right behind another vehicle, I can't see many things getting in there that would damage the radiator. Every time I've hit a bird it's been at the top of the windshield with one exception where it got lodged directly in the upper grille.
The louvers in the upper intake area behind the grille are to enhance aerodynamics above I think 60mph. They close to direct more airflow over the hood.
I get a load of large leaves in there at moment, but at least the gap is big enough to get hand in except the inter cooler one on the rhs of v6d which is a real squeeze to get hand in get grab the leaves.
