    UK number plate dimensions

Anyone know the size of the number plates (UK)? Can’t find a post with dimensions but looking to order plates for private reg ahead of picking up my D5 next week. Rear one looks bigger than “standard” option. Anyone know where I can find the size in mm? Any help appreciated!

Mine were made up by a LR Main dealer at 520mm x 110mm. Front and rear are the same size.

    Hope this helps.

Why not ask the dealership to supply. I’ve yet to be refused or pay for one.

That's what i did, they were happy to oblige. I guess it keeps their name on the car!

Almac75, my D5 has a std 110x520mm front and an oversize 150x530mm on rear, these were fitted by dealer at new on private plate. Originally dealers were fitting the oversize rears but then Gerry didn't like them as it spoiled his design so dealers were told to fit std plates front and rear. Some dealers have carried on fitting the larger rear anyway, I checked with my dealer on ordering as I was going to request the larger rear be fitted, but they said they still fit larger anyway. I had to take the reg off previous D5 on trade in and swapped rear plate from oversize private to std conventional number and for the few days thought it looked odd.

Almac75. As I understand it, whilst there may be 'standardised' dimensions for actual plates, there are no actual regulations stating the size of the plate. There are regulations covering the size and style of letters and their spacing and minimum border sizes, which will dictate the minimum size of the plate. consequently if you only have a few characters your plate could be narrow but if you had the full 7 characters, your plate woulld be much bigger, The plate must also display, BS std, ID of manufacturaturer and name and postcode of supplying outlet.

Thanks for this thread. I wasn't aware dealers fitted the 'oversized' plates to Disco 5's. I've gone onto my supplying dealer's website for a quick look through their used cars and I can see they fit (as a group) the larger rear plates by default to Disco 5's, so I'll be requesting the correct 'standard' sized rear plate from my dealer when my car arrives. IMO the oversized plates look stupid, ill-fitting, and are clearly wrong.

    Thumbs Up

I wanted a standard sized plate for my last one and asked the dealership. I was told LR stipulated the larger plate when supplying vehicles.

How true that is I don’t know. There’s even conflicting info on this post. Personally, I wasn’t going to get hot and bothered over a rear number plate that I rarely see and makes no difference to the running of the vehicle.

If I get any pushback, I'll be pointing them to JLR's very own promo/launch UK pictures/videos which clearly shows the standard sized plate on the back...

If they still pushback, I'll just tell them I'll be ordering a pair from another dealer, and that dealer can/will have their name on my car plates instead. I'm sure they'll soon back down... Laughing

I have a smaller rear plate on mine as I think it helps when looking at the curved part of the tailgate..

My request has been accepted by my dealer:

"No problem – it will have the slim plate fitted at the rear upon your collection"

The dealers fitted larger rears because the recess in the tailgate could take it. It was never the intention of the LR designers though, so LR issued an instruction to dealers to fit standard plates to the rear too.
