Can I ask why you never went for the fixed towbar??

Was it merely an aesthetics thing??

I left the one deployed on my loan car and I cracked my knee on it yesterday, so it does have its advantages OUCH Censored Censored Censored Laughing

I want to tow a caravan. I didn't need the ability to tow the factory that built it Very Happy

Aesthetics was a consideration, I must admit but add to that the retractable tow bar has the ability to measure nose weight which would save me having to bring out the Milenco gauge each time it seemed like a good idea.

Ha ha judging by some of the twin axle photos on here some are the size of Buckingham Palace, absolute monsters Rolling with laughter

Ah ok makes sense then. I never realised there was so much physics involved as I have never had the pleasure of owing a caravan, and a trailers my limit am afraid. I did try too use the weight option by standing on the towbar myself and it said 65- 95 kgs. I assumed would give me an accurate answer not a rough estimate?? Rolling Eyes

Oh well glad you pointed that out as I still have time too change it too a deployable as seriously thinking of a caravan, but your issue still troubles me though, as did my mates. Mind you it never helped him constantly having his car in the salty sea, with his boat trailer, something he conveniently forget too tell LR Laughing Whistle

Hang on... The tow bar just gives you a range of weights?

I've not even managed to try mine so I have no idea what it actually does. The Milenco gauge I'm trying to replace is +/- 1 Kg.

I stood on the tow bar with all my body weight on it whilst my brother was inside operating the touch screen. Hence I got reading of between 65-95 kg I think. Then swapped with my brother who stood on the towball and his was I think 75/85 - 105 kg
I assumed would give you an exact figure not a rough estimate.???
Yes I agree the 1kg deficit either way is paramount too having a safe set up.
Any how maybe because we were balancing on 1 foot and being a bit wobbly that the reading was not steady. I will take a photo tomorrow and upload on here once I recheck it. Like I said am not a caravan owner so all this tech is new too me. I did have 500 kg in the trailer but I never knew we could test the nose weight until I had a play about later in day with the screen. I may just reload trailer up over the weekend and test it again. Maybe possible the tow bar settings are needing recalibrated or that the tow bar weight sensing sensor is faulty?? It may be that you have too put in the exact dimensions and weight of the trailer to get a proper reading which I never, as I just wanted too weigh myself like being on a set of scales. Plus i never read the manual. It's possible I did something wrong though. Sorry to panic you but can anyone else shed any light on this?? Rolling Eyes

Plus you would think LR would have the software programmes written beforehand

One of the vans that Land Rover assist sent out didn't even have the Disco 5 as an option on his Panasonic Tablet. When he plugged into the car the only choices were Disco 1-4, RR Sport or FFRR. Needless to say, it didn't communicate at all.

I forgot too mention, being a bit of a gadget freak, both my washing machine and tumble dryer (well my wife's) have got a feature called smart diagnosis on them. Basically if there is a fault or an error on the machine all that has be done is too place my mobile phone over the machines sensor and hey presto it diagnoses the fault. If the faults a minor fixable one, the software patch can be downland via my mobile app there and then. No need for an engineers call out 3 days later even if the problem is only minor let alone major one. Thankfully never had too use the app yet.

It's just a pity that LR can't have this type of app incorporated in the vehicle as this would make things alot simpler instead of hours of trouble shooting, with the faults going too their database and the solution getting pinged straight back at you via your mobile phone

Our D5 must be a lemon then.

Collected it on 17 March, had 3 Land Rover assist callouts in the first week and it's been back to the dealers twice. It's been at the dealers since 25 March with a software problem that JLR have no idea how to fix.

Did any of the issues leave the vehicle unable to operate and drive?

The car was capable of moving but it was not capable of towing.

    Thanks Stewart.

Leaving caravan behind is bad but not as bad as having to walk for help. Some places I travel have no cell signal at all.

What symptoms did the non deployment display if any?
Did it make a noise, as if stuck or nothing at all?
I wonder if a bit of force delicate intervention may have helped.

When you push the button by the tailgate nothing happens at all. The manual also talks about a tow bar icon being shown on the info screen, my car doesn't show any tow bar icon. It's like the tow bar is simply not there (except it is, you can see it if you look under the car).

Maybe it's simply just a case of a loose connection, hence it's not showing up on the screen icons, like a loose positive or a bad earth??
Mind you alot of the connections nowadays are in blocks, so maybe the whole block was not pushed into the socket correctly until it clicked into place.??
I had problems with my light board on one side and only realised that the lighting loom had 2 separate feeds from the main source, ie a separate feed too the left lights and separate feed too the right side. The feeds twisted on until it clicks into place. One feed was on, but had not clicked into place. Hence no power.
This was after the trailer specialists had assembled it for me and suppossedly checked it as well. Shocked

Sounds like the CCF needs to be updated. I would imagine your dealer knows how to do this.

    It's nothing simple.

JLR technical have been sending a series of software patches to try (11 so far). None of them have worked.

As a software developer I suspect you are suffering from a problem that is afflicting all motor vehicle manufacturers, that being the software is now far more complex than the rest of the vehicle. BMW now employ more software engineers than any other kind of engineer, and its a similar story elsewhere. the issue is that software bugs are notoriously difficult to eliminate however much testing you do. The end result is that they sometimes make it into the field and you get the problems you're having. In the IT world we always avoid version x.0 of any product, better to wait for version x.1 when hopefully the bugs have been sorted out. My Disco 3 had a few of them, none required towing, just a reboot in the form of turning the car off and on again. My Disco 4 had only 1 issue that put it into limp-home mode, rectified quickly at the dealers by a s/w update. My Disco 4.5 hasn't had any issues, but I'm waiting until mid-2018 to get my D5 as I expect the gremlins will have been ironed out by then.
