Little trip with the caravan
Well we've woken up in the new caravan in Tenby. The kids are loving it. After getting everything set up properly it was a joy to drive down.
I don't think I'd cope as well without all the super-site stuff on it but so far so good.
Quite a few admirers of the whole outfit but I have to say when we first got here as caravan newbies it really was a case of - all the gear and no idea!!
I've got a week on the air ambulance starting tomorrow so just the de-stress I need before that.

When I'm not in the operating theatre, I'm mountain biking, spending time with my family, running and socialising. I have a Discovery 5 HSE Lux with pretty much every option ticked. This is my first ever Land Rover. Been a rocky road with regards to reliability but we're getting there.

Sorry for the delay - down in London.
It was really good - surprised how much grunt the car still has with the caravan on the back and we were loaded with stuff. The guys at the caravan centre set everything up for me and they said that it is almost overcomplicated. I spoke to two guys when I picked it up. Both thought the D5 was a great car but both also said given the choice, they would prefer to two with a Discovery 4. Having never driven one of those I have nothing to compare with. I was happy with it anyway.
I'm still not convinced the caravan is right for us, kids loved it but they would have loved it if I got a £500 caravan and put it on the drive for them to sleep in.

Hi Doc.
Did the guys at the caravan centre elaborate on what exactly they felt was 'almost overcomplicated'? Also, had the 2 guys who said they would prefer to tow with a D4, actually towed with a D5?

They both took the D5 out during the day it was there. Didn't really elaborate but I didn't push. The one said that electronic gadgets are no substitute for weight in the tow car. I think they like the heavy steel chassis on the D4.
I got the impression you can just put a something on the back of a D4, put your foot down and move. With the D5 it's more about set up.

Does your car have the advanced trailer assist fitted ? That's the only thing that I can see being 'complicated' to set up.
I will be leaving home shortly to go and pick up my courtesy D5 and will be taking a couple of caravan out tomorrow for a good 'test' and will post my findings then, unless of course it all goes horribly wrong then I can tell you personally (if your air ambulance covers Scotland

Yep it has advanced trailer assist. I probably need to spend more time playing with it to set it up. Oh yeh, try and keep it on the grey bits. Roadside reboa yesterday and horrendous burns today, I need a quiet one tomorrow please!

Yeh, I've enjoyed the week down here so far. A different type of work, not used to handing over patients, they're normally handed over to me!

Right my car went in for a piece of trim to be replaced and also asked them to look at the parking sensors which do not cut out when I attach the caravan.
Picked car up tonight and was told the program for tow pack had not fully loaded and as such the park sensors were not switching off. They also told me that there was trailer detect screen and program that should have displayed on the screen that wasn't activated. All are now sorted and activated and this should make a difference to the sensors and the towing. Will hook it up to caravan tomorrow to see what is different.

Just did some more testing with the bike rack on and the changes in weight distribution and tyre pressures make a great difference whereas the weight and rigidity of the D4 could make you a little complacent!
