ENGINE OIL LEAK - LIMP MODE

Hi guys, just after some advice/experience..

Drove 200 miles back from North wales on Thursday night.

Just got off the Motorway and the car went into limp mode, had my wife, 2 young kids and dog in the car so managed to get it the remaining 15 miles home.

There is a lot of oil on the front of the engine around the main pulley wheel area, possible crank seal failure?

Limp mode has currently disappeared but it struggles to start and did stall.

Car is a 17 plate HSE 2.0 SD4 with no warranty…. Typical. Only 25k miles, 5k in the last 2 years.

The cars booked into Yeovil land rover on Wedneaday but i am expecting the worse.

    Anyone had anything similar?

    Cheers

    Ian

I think the oil could be red herring. If some oil was spilt during servicing when changing the filter the oil can work it’s was under the throttle body and down there.
If this were me I would take a 7mm spanner. Remove the front air hose on the throttle body and look inside to see if the butterfly was jammed shut.
Just that seems to be a common problem

Okay, I presume they have inspected it and that’s their conclusion?

I’d be looking at one of the specialist Indy garages.

Mastora, TVLR, Durham 4x4 & HR Auto Specialists all recommended.
Have also used JAS (Pocklington (York) in the past.

    That obviously up north.

For your area, why don’t you sign up to the sister site, the www.disco4.co.uk and simply ask there for someone in your area. You’ll get plenty of responses at non rip off prices. From memory, a non franchised garage should be about half the price. Then you can make a decision.

PS Woody32 on that site is an Indy in your area, you could drop him a PM.

£24k ! I hope you can get this sorted. That’s disgraceful on a FSH 25k mile car.

    Thanks!

The issue has been highlighted to LR head office in the hope of a contribution/full coverage of the bill and or advice on how to proceed.

Turns out the #2 & #4 piston rings have failed, this has caused the oil leak due to the engine being pressurised and a plug blowing to ease the pressure.

This has also knackered the #2 & #4 injectors.

Please pray for me haha! .

Good luck. It’s a difficult one to predict, particularly so recently with a change in the executive office at LR. I agree with you, dealer serviced, the engine should last longer, on the flip side, it must be a year or so out of manufacturers warranty? You can only ask. It will be on a case by case basis.

If, and I do say if, they do concede, I’d imagine you’d have to make a contribution. I can’t see them swallowing the whole bill tbh. Either way, find out from an Indy what the cost would be, then you can make a decision when you know.

I admit I swithered recently when the car turned three years as to take out a warranty or not. I decided to take out LRs own one, it’s disaster planning as it cost just over £1k. The other option was Warranty Direct at half the price.

Oh, and if/when it’s repaired, get shot of it ASAP. I had a LR that got a major repair and it never sounded right after that!

Best of luck Ian. That really sucks for such a low miler. Fingers crossed you get some significant support from JLR.

    Keep us posted.

When I bought my Discovery less than a month ago I was offered an extended warranty. £1500 for 3 years. But when I read the details it had a max claim of £5k. So I declined.

You can get a warranty through LR that will be a lot better. They just have to asses the car beforehand.

LR extended warranty isn’t from land rover, it’s just an insurance backed scheme that in some cases covers less items than some of the aftermarket warranties.

You could source an engine from a write off LR or Jag and have it fitted for a lot less than that quote.
