Why are there so many tyres on eBay?

Just an idle question arising from my searching eBay for a new spare wheel.

There seems to be a number of sellers with loads of 4 sets of ‘new’ wheels and new tyres for Landrovers.

    Did someone over supply? Laughing

I managed to get a new 20” wheel with new tyre (the labels and lines still visible) for £150 within economic driving distance. The alloy is spotless outside but shows minor contact marks on the inner hub…so it has been on a wheel.

Not bothered about that for a spare ….but the same Pirelli costs over £200 on its own.
So I am mistified how they can sell a wheel and new tyre for less than a retail tyre price?

……And why so much choice out there?

Are they standard equipment wheels rather than optional sets?

I know that in the case of BMW, cars came with standard wheels and then dealers fitted the optional ones and sold off the standards. So there were always adverts for complete brand new sets of the standard wheels and tyres.

The scuff marks are probably from the less than effective LR spare wheel protector, get an RLD one if you want to have the best protection. If buying a set of 4, easiest way to check if they are genuine take-offs is that all 4 tyres should have same date coding, if not they are likely to be a set of "spares" acquired from a potentially dubious source. JLR had so many spares being stolen off D5 management cars that they started specing the management cars with the no cost option of a space saver to stop the thefts.

You are correct. Just looked at the spare I removed and it has the same marks and that hasn’t been ‘on a wheel’.
