Humming / Vibration / Drone on idle
Hiya,
Has anyone had or notice a humming or droning noise on idle?
It’s hard to explain, but it happens when the car is in gear or in park and when idling.
If you rev it slightly, it disappears, likewise if you let the foot off the brake and edges forward it goes away.
The noise appears to come from the near side of the car.
I have got a video, but hard to hear it so I’ll try and get another. .

Thanks

Nope! Still the same and notice most days but I sort of ignore it now!
When I took it to a specialist for something else, he wasn't concerned and said it was the oil pump.
I believe either my oil pump is on it's way out, or they are all like this but don't see many posts about.
Would be good to drive another one of similar age and mileage to see if I notice it, mines a 2018.

Thanks for the response, oil pump sounds worrying, Mine is also a 2018, searching the web suggests it isn't a common issue, if i find out more i'll come back to you.

Yes be good.
I have a servicing package on mine. If I mention a noise to investigate they want £125 straight away to diagnose!
I guess if I need other work, I’ll get the specialist to re look at it.

Have a look at the pipes and fuel filter top left by the bulkhead for fouls, was an issue on the TDV6, when introduced the SDV6 slight alterations to pipe routing and fuel filter isolation improved it. My SDV6 got it when they changed the front struts, I tweaked the pipe routing to eliminate fouls and issue went away.

Thanks for the info, you are dead right, I spoke to the dealer today as it’s going back for a different fault, he mentioned about a fuel filter and fuel pipe issue which causes this, after reading your post I just went and put my hand on the fuel pipes and I can clearly feel that’s were the noise/vibration is coming from. That’s a result as I thought was going to end up as one those”it’s normal” excuses.

This is very helpful thank you.
So is it a reasonably easy fix to do at home?

Have a good look at the pipework around the fuel filter and make sure not touching anywhere it shouldn't, gently tease away or get some soft foam in there. On my TD6 I could hear it at idle in D, gently moving off, as the revs went up slightly the noise went away and if memory serves me right it came back between 1100 & 1200 rpm, then disappeared again.

Ok will take a look. Yes absolutely correct on idle and lifting the revs engaging D or R it disappears.
Makes me happy to read this!
I may post some photos when I come to look.

So today I changed the 2 fuel return pipes and it has fixed the noise. Had to remove wipers, the whole panel behind the wipers, both bracing struts, the metal plate under those and move the wiring loom, took an hour or so but not to much bother.

I’ll need to look at doing this too. On a road trip and I’ve often thought this is bugging me I need to sort it.

Gutted it’s returned
I’m putting up with it for now. Problem I have is time/tenacity to inspect it.
Other dilemma is I have a JLR service package so it’s not going to go there for inspection as it’s £125 alone to diagnose, although that might be £125 well spent for then a specialist to fix it!
