    SDV6 Engine Problems

Hi everyone. Just wondering about changing up from my 16 years old Discovery 3 which is getting a bit tired now, although still much loved, and wondering if the breaking crankshaft issues have been resolved in the very latest Discovery 5s? I have read somewhere that Ford have made changes to the Lion engine that mean the crankshafts no longer break, but wanted some other reassurance that this is the case.

Sorry, but if you’re wanting reliability, don’t buy a D5.

I wouldn't agree with Darras. There are, for sure, some rogue cars and yes some have had engine problems (but then, I had a rogue engine twice in a 2010 D4, so it's nothing new to LR). BUT, there are also some excellent cars out there - and plenty of owners who have had very good experiences.

I sold my MY2019 /Sept '18 registered 3.0 litre diesel HSE last month and it had been pretty much faultless over 50k and 5 years. Only issues I think I ever had was sometimes Apple Car Play wouldn't connect (about 1 in 20 times, and they couldn't fix it - but when it happened, I knew on the next start of the engine it would be fine). The blind spot monitor needed a software update once and the flip down cubby box under the satnav screen needed a recall as it started to stick.

Other than that, it never needed any unnecessary dealer visits in between services and the occasional health check I give the car ahead of long-distance holidays.

A true pleasure to drive, and only beaten by my MY23.5, which is even plusher and nicer.

I don't think there's a car on the market which can truly match a D5 for their all-round capabilities. With everything else I looked at, there was to be some trade off in an area I couldn't accept.

MY23.5 D5 3.0 MHEV Metropolitan Edition – Santorini Black – Ebony Windsor Leather – 21” Style 5025 gloss black wheels – 21” full size spare tyre – Black roof rails – Black side mouldings - Williams Ceramic Coat. [Gone: D5 HSE @ 50,795miles: (now LH68 BYW)]

Sorry guys, I've realised that I'm approaching this from the wrong angle. I'm looking at a 24 model year car, which presumably has the in line 6 pot engine, and I've confused myself. What I should be asking if whether the oil dilution issue with its knock on effect of killing the turbo was still an issue?

No. So far...touch wood....the D300 engines (also used in the Defender) are seeming to have good reliability. There are very few reports of an problems.

MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
    MY2019 D5 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - sold to a dealer for a crazy price!
