Where do cross bars go on the roof rails for a box?
OK I have the roof rails on and the official cross bars to go on but my question is how do I know where to fix the cross bars distance apart etc so they fit the roof box that will go on it? Can the cross bars go anywhere on the roof rails or do they have to be a certain distance apart?
The roof loading is important - the locating holes in the roof rails are there to optimize the load on the rails and the roof.
If you place the crossbars too far apart you actually reduce the load the roof rails can carry, and if you are near the limit of what your roof box can handle, this can also cause the box to fail.
Placing them near the feet is fine as that is where the load is transferred to the vehicle.
The rating for bars is not that great so not really an issue, and just fine for a paddleboard as a paddleboard has a high windage, so you don't want too much board forward of the front bar.
