I’m unable to start the parking sensors in my discovery (2018). There is a known issue with one of the front sensors that i need to take a look at but I can’t imagine that is preventing the whole parking sensor system from working.
When I put the car in reverse, there’s a red line through the icon and a cross through the speaker icon. Tapping on the icon on the lower bar makes it blink orange a couple of times but then it stops and nothing has changed and no errors.
I noticed that when I put the car in reverse after starting the car, it will beep continuously for about 3 seconds, and then stop. That same issue won't occur again until a fresh start of the car.
I read elsewhere that if one of the sensors is not working the whole system stops working, so I'm going to fix/replace the broken sensor and try again.
@ Nifty77 I was lucky in my case. The faulty sensor was visibly damaged, it had a massive gash in it. I'm fairly certain that the error codes from the OBD reader also identified the faulty sensor.
An old school trick for checking parking sensors was by holding a mobile phone close to each sensor...you could hear the clicks through the phone speaker. No clicking pointed to the offending sensor. The D5 sensors are ultrasonic so emit high frequency sound waves.
Electromagnetic parking sensors work slightly differently but they're usually not visible like the round, button shaped ultrasonic type found commonly on most cars.
Haven't done that in many years though. Otherwise, checking for obvious damage or scoring on the face of the sensor would be my first port of call...barring that, GAP IID tool or equivalent ODB diagnostic tool...or as a last resort, pull the bumpers off and test each sensor and connections individually with a multimeter. Occasionally, the connecting plugs and terminals on the sensor can get corroded on older vehicles, usually the corner ones near the wheels due to water spray etc.
Individual replacement sensors are cheap enough...and they're basically plug and play so no technical skills required in replacing them....the hardest bit besides noticing obvious damage is finding which one (or more) is causing the problem
