2017 HSE Lux - 5 months review
Bought my 2017 HSE Lux in Nov
I love the car and we've gone to the alps and back with no issues. but it has had a few issues since....
I've just had the inlet manifold replaced as the car kept going in to restricted perfomance. Apparently due to the Intake manifold runner control being coked up with carbon i guess, Happened mostly when towing at first but then more often at low revs. Thats fixed (mostly under extended warrenty) but now.....
Start stop no longer works, the battery may be old I guess or the BMS has failed
and
The passenger seat airbag keep triggering the airbag light on the dash.
Also
The bonnet sensor doesnt seem to know when the bonnet it up.
All apparently common problems....
I also had to have the windscreen replaced just before Christmas as it leaked horribly. That was sorted by the garage I bought it from. But, the misitng sensor is throwing open circuit errors as I guess it drowned when the cover filled with water..
All in all i'm 5 months in to ownership and wondering what the hell I've done. Had lexus cars before and never had ANY issues in over 15 years..
I'm making good use of my LAUNCH X431 Elite scanner though. Oh and I did manage to fix the wind noise from the sunroof
I should add, if anyone has any advise on the airbag issue let me know... if I move the passenger seat it goes off for a few days and then comes back... or the start stop issue..... -

I bought my '17 TD6 HSE last November as well, luckily I've had no real issues barring a busted window regulator since then.
Having had a pair of D2's and the D4 over the years kinda prepared me for the D5...it's a Land Rover after all so I knew my spannering skills and my toolbox would be well used. It's almost a prerequisite of Land Rover ownership...no matter how many shiny buttons and switches they put on it. It's always going to be a labour of love.
After all, if I wanted boring and reliable, I'd have bought a BMW X5 or a Volvo XC90, both of which are fashionably acceptable as farmer's cars these days
The D5 had a decent-ish and regular service history before I bought it except for not having the cam belts replaced (it had done 74K miles) so replacing the belts and a full oil and filters service were the first jobs on my to do list after I got it home. I've also changed the gearbox, diffs and transfer case oils since then.
I've never cared much about dealer service histories nor ever trusted a dealer to do basic servicing after buying a used Land Rover. I've always bought Discoverys in particular... just because I like them and know exactly what I'm buying into. After all, 99.5% of Discoverys sold since the D3 was first introduced have ever seen as much as a damp piece of grass far less been used off road...But basically, if I haven't done the servicing myself and got my hands dirty in the process, it's not been done is the way I look at it.
Paperwork is nice and all that, but peace of mind and the satisfaction of doing it myself is better. It's pointless having the basic skills and the tools in the workshop otherwise. I made the mistake of trusting a dealer service history when I bought the D4...and it cost me the inconvenience of fighting the the dealer into fitting a new engine when the supposedly 'replaced' timing belt snapped after 3 months
Anyhoo, I cleaned out the throttle body and checked the butterfly valve operation when I removed it during the cam belt replacement, saves having to wait for it to start sticking or sooting up. I didn't fancy cleaning the EGR valves out...although I should have done. Ah well, that's a task for next year...or so
Besides the basic preventative maintenance with the oils, filters, replacing both cam belts & pulleys, waterpump and auxiliary belt and taking the DPF off for an overdue cleaning, replacing the busted window regulator is the only real fault I've had with it. It's been running as sweet as a nut and I'm very pleased with it. I've done around 5K miles since I've had it so it's due another oil and filters change (maybe front disks and pads as well while I'm at it)...I'll get around to that in the next month or so.
All in all, I'd still say it's a step up from my '15 plate D4 HSE with all the D5's fancy schmancy switches, knobs and buttons to play with...although I do miss the Land Rover 'feel' and split tailgate from my D4 sometimes, I should have kept it rather than selling it on, just for the nostalgia.
The D5 isn't as hard worked as my old D4, besides occasionally towing a livestock trailer with a few cows around and charging across muddy fields here and there, so it's just for my pleasure as my daily driver in semi retirement...if there is such a thing for a farmer... Both my sons have taken over running the farm so I'm just the shouty old bloke who turns up at lunchtime and tells them they're doing it wrong.
Ah well, I've still got my old '02 plate TD5 D2 sitting in the workshed...just in case. It needs a set of injector seals and a new MAF sensor when I can be bothered getting around to fitting them...but being my first ever Discovery, I'm still rather attached to it.

Credit to you both. My limits lie at diesel, AdBlue, air for tyres, washer fluid - and more recently I acquired the skill of toping up the coolant too. Besides that, I have to go to a dealer or Land Rover Assist for help........
For that very reason, it makes sense for me to move the cars on at no more than 4 years, and to always extend the warranty for that final year.
