Had another chat with the lovely Glynis at In Control customer support and it's all ready for me to register when I'm ready. (Thanks again Phil)

Does anyone know if I need a data sim card in the car to do the registration and linking process or not?
I know I need an internet connection but I can park the car close enough to the house to pick up my broadband to use as a hotspot...Glynis wasn't sure if that would do or not.

I stuck a pay monthly SIM card in, £2.50 per month and it worked.
I guess it could work close to home connected to your home WiFi, but you would need to leave it all switched on.
I also had to press a series of buttons under the LR agents guidance to start it up.
I've since found out that I need a security software update which can only be done at a main dealer, so I've got it booked in for that on the 21st. At a cost of £200!!!!!

I have a funny feeling that I'll have the same issue...So, unless the security update is a hard requirement, it won't be getting done as long as the remote features on the In Control app still work. If I need the security update, a trip to the dealer is a major expedition for me as I live on a very small rock in the middle of the north sea Neutral

Geographically challenged just about sums it up. It takes an entire day with 3 hours spent on a ferry each way to the main island just to pop into the nearest Tesco...never mind a Land Rover dealership Laughing

Just brought a 40gb data only sim off amazon for £30. It arrives tomorrow. Lasts 24months so thats pence per month. Lets see how it goes. I want to see the satellite and street view function and thats my main reason - just another excuse to part with cash. Will be interesting to see how quickly i use the data up.

I've got all that on Google maps with Android Auto though... I don't even have to plug my phone in to the car since I bought a bluetooth dongle to connect remotely... Android Auto has the full SatNav live traffic updates and all the features that the inbuilt LR software has...or at least all the features that matter.

I bought a 6 month unlimited data sim card to shove in the car when I first bought it, but honestly never used it, partly because of not being able to register for In Control etc...but after the sim ran out in February, I just didn't see the point in renewing it.

I bought a wireless usb for android auto.
The wife uses it, but it's a faff to change it when I want to use it, so I use in control and the wife uses android auto.

Does anyone know an easy way to switch used in android auto?

Google maps is much better than the land rover app.

For when my son drives my Disco on occasion, I bought another dongle, I just leave it it on the centre cubby tray for when he uses the car. Since the spare dongle is paired to his phone instead of mine, it's just a matter of switching the dongles over when he jumps in...

His phone is also paired with the onboard connectivity stuff so that's not an issue. The car detects his phone and he just selects it on the centre screen when prompted. We only needed the Android Auto stuff...besides just plugging his phone in using an old fashioned USB cable...

For the sake of forking out another 30 quid on Amazon for the spare dongle, it was the easiest option...

The linking process was extremely simple and took less than 5 minutes with nothing other than my phone. No data sim card needed or anything else...but yet another palaver...although I'm now registered with In Control, linked the Bling Barge to the phone app and my online account, it's all activated and working except I can't upgrade or renew the available In Control subscription services...

I have the basic Pro services (which are free but almost entirely useless) Both the Protect and Remote premium services which I wanted to try out are marked as subscription expired on the 15th of December 2020 which obviously, the previous owner didn't renew.

I still can't access either of those services via the app or online...they're greyed out on both the app and my In Control web account with no option whatsoever to subscribe or renew Censored

I guess I'll be phoning the lovely Glynis again tomorrow Neutral

Thanks Mole, that's a great idea.

When you call Glynis, she will talk you through a procedure to do on the car, that will allow you to update the options at a price.
Once you've done that she will tell you to take it to a dealer, cross their palm with silver, and they will update the security software.
Maybe they will take pity on you because of your remote location and tell you a secret way of updating the software?

Phoned the lovely Glynis again this morning and she kindly activated the subscriptions for a month FOC like they did with you Phil. She just forgot to activate them yesterday during our phone call...Strangely enough though, why did I think the subscription renewal was expensive?

When I asked her about the cost of renewing the subscription, she told me that the renewal was £40 per year or £60 for 2 years... Shocked At that price, I'll be renewing my subscription for a couple of years once the month FOC expires...

Haven't tried the Protect feature...but I'm hardly likely to utilise it living where I do...

I had a play with the remote features in the app though and yup, they'll be very handy indeed...so a thumbs up for Remote Premium... and while I'm at it, I'll take back my initially dismissive and sadly uninformed comments about the In Control features at the start of this thread.

Best of all, I no longer have some strange dude's personal details tied to my Bling Barge via In Control, even though it hadn't been active since Dec 2020...'Tis mine at last.

As for the experience of dealing with Glynis from In Control customer support, compared to the seemingly endless parade of Land Rover branded buffoons I had dealings with on the phone during this saga, she was an absolute pleasure and couldn't be more helpful. 10/10 Thumbs Up

...And thank you, to Phil, JonM and Wolfpack who helped steer me onto the right path despite my Land Rover temper tantrums Whistle
