You can pay the official warranty monthly instead of lump sum, at no extra cost, which works quite well. In my experience it also works just as smoothly with the dealer as the original warranty, absolutely no hassle for the owner having to process a claim or anything. Just drop car off and they take care of everything.

On a £4k warranty bill that's still £333pcm.
On the average bill of £1600, £133pcm...I'd have to suffer total chocolate Hob-Nob abstinence

The warranty cost isn't anywhere near 4k, or even 2K.

The warranty is a lot cheaper than £16k for a new engine and my car has had two in under 50k miles.
It’s a problem with the 2lt, but not exclusively. It also affects the new Defender, Disco Sport, Evoques etc and it doesn’t matter if you stick to the two year servicing or go for a yearly oil change.
And before someone chips in and says it no worse than other makes, you’re wrong, it is. Hence why there is several class actions on the go and why a Facebook group specifically created for engine failures has over 21,000 members.

My childish comments aside, I fully understand why the warranty is regarded as a necessary (if expensive) evil for modern Land Rover owners in particular. The 2.0L Ford based Ingenium is a disaster of a power plant and well worthy of the scorn heaped on it...but for some reason, probably cost, and also probably a legacy of having been owned by Ford... JLR have stuck with it.
The 3.0L V6 version is
slightly better reliability wise but as you said, still a bit of a chocolate engine...and still a Ford at the end of the day.
JLR also didn't help themselves by recommending such a ridiculously long service interval of course...but that's another story entirely
Dinosaurs like me with mechanical skills... or even those old fashioned Land Rover enthusiasts with the confidence or willingness to buy older used vehicles... or even keep them longer than 3 or 4 years, buy a Haynes book of lies, a set of spanners and have a tinker with stuff are a dying breed and consequently, no longer fit into JLR's target 'luxury car' customer demographic.

I knew this would happen. Just renewed my LR Assist after a massive service at the stealers and, of course, a few days later amber warning comes on. Call LR Assist who plug in their magic box and tell me to take it to a dealer as vaulter is an open circuit on the DPF filter. Some debate as to whether this is covered on the extended warranty but we will see soon.
Also, I thought you were given a loan car if mine is in the dealers but there again I am so naive in the murky world of LR dealings. As yet I’ve not got one but has anyone else been given a loan car under extended warranty?

The dealership out of sheer common courtesy should offer you a replacement vehicle if yours is in their workshop. It's been common practise for years with even indy garages...
As for your DPF fault, if it does turn out to be a unit failure...there has been recent discussion on here whether a replacement unit would be covered on extended warranty or not. It was about 50/50 if I remember rightly.
However, I'd suggest strong words with the particular dealership if they say no. Argue your case...especially after just having had a major service done. If the warranty won't cover the entire cost of a replacement DPF, the dealership may well offer to part cover it if you shout loud enough...

Just read this post with interest, coming from a L322 range rover and previously a D3 im unfortunately all to well aware of the reliability issues and therefore should know better than to get another LR but i need a big car for work and to tow my tin tent so i got a 1 owner 2017 D5 hse full service history 59k on the clock.
I decided i needed a warranty and shopped around and found one with ALA insurance, they cover repairs upto the value of the car and as i opted for the platinum warranty package no excess either, all for the princely sum of (i hope your sitting down) £1,196.92 per year which i though was a fantastic price, last month the passenger window decided to stop working, called them booked it in and it was fixed £438.00 they settled the full bill including a £50 diagnostic direct with the garage within 4 days of getting the bill.
i have been having odd engine management lights coming on and then full DPF warnings and the throttle body was the issue sticking, this is being replaced today again under warranty, im having the car serviced next week and anything else they find will be added to the list.
whilst the total amount claimed back is just under the yearly cost its the peace of mind knowing if the worst was to happen the cost will be covered, i cant rate them highly enough they have been fantastic well worth a look.

Apologies for late reply. Happy to report that LR Assist came up with a loan car, Defender 110, after one day wait. The LR Assist technician told me the DPF was ok so fault is probably wiring or sensor.Just waiting for LR Dealer to say otherwise and cost of £200 or so. I’ve not had time to check if a DPF filter is covered.
Out of interest I’ve found the Defender 110 about the same as my Discover for comfort etc but the Defender has the 2 ltr engine which is nowhere near good enough for such a heavy car.It just lacks
Power if you’re in a hurry so I will stick with the Diacovery. However, I could see myself heading towards the 3 ltr version some time in the future.

It's possibly a sticking throttle body valve which is a fairly common cause of DPF full and turbo overboost fault indications as it soots up and the butterfly valve sticks...which can be cleaned and repaired but only as a temporary measure.
Replacement throttle body isn't cheap...especially from a dealership... but nowhere near the cost of a DPF unit
Average throttle body price from indy suppliers is around the £500 mark for a genuine LR part..around £100 cheaper for after market.
