Most odd.
Yesterday, completely out of the blue, I received a notification from my D5 insurers, here’s what it says:
“ We've been contacted by someone saying they were involved in an accident with you and it was your fault. It's important we speak to you about this otherwise we'll have to deal with this as a fault claim. This means your premiums may go up or your policy could be cancelled.”
My first instinct was to suspect a scam. However, when I logged onto my account via the official insurers app, there is indeed a claim logged against my account. At this point it’s important to mention that I have not been involved in any accident, haven’t given my details to anyone, and have no idea what any of this is about.
This “claim” reckons there was an incident that took place on 23rd Sept and it was my fault, so presumably details were exchanged, photos taken etc. etc. of which I am utterly clueless.
Now, here’s the kicker, being a cautious type and wanting an explanation, I checked my Land Rover locator app and checked my insurance approved tracker details to see where I went in my car on the date in question. Low and behold, I have documented evidence that my car never left my home driveway from the 18th to 24th September ( I was actually unwell with Covid at the time ) so this begs the question, WTF is going on?
I can’t speak to the insurance company until office hours but, as I suspect, how would the fraudsters get my insurance details, reg number etc. and is this a known scam?

Could be that a clone was involved in an accident. DVLA would give your details if asked who owns the car…. You have the evidence that it wasn’t you.

I don’t even currently know the location of this supposed accident so it could be anywhere in the UK but I know my vehicle didn’t move on the day of the allegation but I’ll keep that info in my pocket for the time being.
Surely all parties have to agree who’s at fault before a claim can occur?
Confused.🫤

I suppose I would be asking if the claimant actually got your insurance details verbally from the third party at the time of the accident or from a search of your registration number afterwards.
My father got a claim against him some years ago after the driver of his “supposed vehicle” scraped a parked car and didn’t stop. The registration number was written down wrongly by a witness. Ironically it was the same make and model as dad’s car,…but the colour was wrong.
So the circumstances of the recording, may be significant here also.

I’m somewhat disappointed with my insurance company to be truthful. In registering a claim against me ( admittedly they’ve approached me for details which I cannot provide ) they are already implying that I may be guilty and I find that rather distasteful.
I’m sure it’s a money making scam from a chancer, I’m just curious as you point out, to learn exactly how they got my details without me volunteering them.😳

It is possible that insurers have found my details however this doesn’t detract from the fact that my own insurance company have allowed a claim against my policy without consultation from the person holding the policy. That I feel is underhand and not in the interests of their customer and I will be insisting this is removed without delay.
I’m quite looking forward to the challenge but will insist all the details are revealed about this “accident” before I show my hand and prove it wasn’t me or my vehicle. I will be insisting they confirm the date this alledgedly took place and further confirm the location.

Sounds to me like someone may have cloned your number plates for nafarious purposes, been involved in a hit and run or something and the reg number has been taken and reported.
Hard to tell though, there's so many crash for cash and other insurance scams going around it could well be anything. Make sure your enquiries to your insurers are initially done over the phone.

If that was the case though, the police would have contacted me directly surely?
I think it’s a chancer, probably a local one, trying their luck or it’s a mistake by the insurers, who’ve entered the wrong reg number.

Nice one Moley, thanks for that.
I’ll go down the “ghost” route and see what they have to say for themselves.
I can catergorically confirm with two trackers and 3 cameras, that my car never moved on the date in question so it will potentially get quite interesting if they become insistent.
I’m gonna keep that info up my sleeve for the time being as I don’t believe it’s up to me to prove I wasn’t involved and more the claimant who should prove I was involved.
Really disappointed that the insurance company registered a claim against me without speaking to me first though.
They’ll have to do some crawling to right that wrong.

I’m 50/50 as to this being a vehicle on a cloned plate or an admin error of sorts.
You would have thought any clerical error would have been identified & corrected before pushing out the claim notification to you,
but having to deal with the muppet’s over at DL in the past, anything is possible.
Edit: your insurance company putting you on notice of a claim against you is exactly what they have done,
Albeit by electronic communication rather than a voice call.

Nice camera Moley, do it.😃
++Update++
I have spoken to the insurance company this morning and advised them I have no knowledge of this incident, wasn’t involved and haven’t given my details to anybody. They said they’ll be approaching the third party to ask them for photographic evidence or further information to support their claim.
They have told me where the reported incident alledgedly occurred, its about 40 miles from my location, and I can confirm I’ve never been there.
I did advise them about the two tracking systems that prove my car never left the driveway and the three camera systems that also confirm the same and I was advised this is very strong evidence and they will be denying involvement pending further confirmation from the third party.
I was obviously unable to give them any details about this alledged claim as I simply wasn’t involved.
The insurance company suspect that the registration number has been incorrectly recorded IF there was even an accident.
I’ll update this thread when I have more info
