    Engine rattle from nowhere

Drove 160 miles no issues took car to shop, started car with windows down and heard a rattle noise so I popped the bonnet and was greeted with this, we’re away in north wales car is a 2017, 70k full service history, main service under a month ago, replaced both timing belts at the same time, can’t hear anything with windows up, car drives perfectly no loss of power it’s very hilly here so a good test, no warning symbols no error codes using my gap tool, no smoke it’s just started this noise oil at correct level

    Any ideas

Top end rattles that loud and metronomic are usually a bit more catastrophic...rough idling, smoke, etc.. a broken water pump, which is another likely source of loud rattling, would show overheating....if it were a timing belt tensioner or idler, or camshaft related...you'd have the same rough idling or it wouldn't start.

    Just for comparison, here's a 2016 3.0L SDV6 D4 with a big end gone.

If there's a local garage, I'd pop it in and let them have a listen. Doesn't have to be a LR or 4x4 garage, it's strictly engine mechanical, so no diagnostic kit will help...but any decent and experienced fitter will give you a better idea.

I'd pull the oil filter and check for shiny metallic bits captured in the folds which is a warning sign (besides the loud clacking noise)...not easy if you haven't got a 32mm socket and ratchet handy.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you though...whatever it ends up being...

If I remember rightly, you had a D4 with a crankshaft failure as well? Sad

The worst of this is...the warning signs for this (assuming it is big ends) were there to see trapped in the oil filter over the last few servicing schedules.

It's the godsend of having the paper element filter in that you can check on every oil change for those tell tale metallic deposits, long before the shell bearings go. Too many fitters or 'technicians' just chuck the old filters in the bin without checking them when they do an oil/filter service...probably too frightened to get their hands dirty.

It's old fashioned mechanical experience...sadly, becoming increasingly rare in modern workshops where they've become too reliant on plugging a car into a computer to tell them what's wrong with it Neutral

Sorry about that, got my wires crossed. I remember someone from here mentioned having a D4 with the chocolate crankshaft...

That's a huge relief having the warranty though, keep us posted on what happens Thumbs Up
