2017 Discovery Si6 HSE Corris Grey

Not sure there was a 2020 version of the si6? Thought they stopped in 2019?

It’s difficult to compare, unless you’ve had both. I’ve had the si6 for 6 years and if it “says” anything, I would have upgraded to a 20/21 /22 model before now , if I could. The other point is there are many many times more 3l diesels about which might slant comparisons.

But from what I’ve read, they both suffer the same JLR faults….leaking windscreen, rusting window controls, air suspension failures, etc

For me the difference revolves around usage. All diesels are more economic than their petrol equivalents if that matters. Diesels aren’t the best choice for regular short trips where their fuel economy advantage is eroded and introduces dpf and clogging up issues. Tuggers love to talk torque advantages of diesels over petrol (yawn). Frankly there’s enough grunt to spare in the SI6 having dragged my 1700kg hotel room around Europe for me to have never felt 2nd class to a diesel. I am sure purists will pull me up on that…torque at lower rpm comparisons. That may be true with lesser tugs but any 3L Discovery does everything needed of it.

Petrol has a timing chain so doesn’t need changing at the same frequency as diesel belts but you need to listen for the warning rattle north of 80k…..some have started to rattle earlier.

Oh and never having driven a 3L diesel Discovery…..the SI6 absolutely flies!

In fairness the newer 3L diesels have a number of advantages over the si6 and their earlier diesel counterparts, so you will probably find a 2020 diesel model will be superior to a 2019 Si6.

But a lot of this was mentioned in your September post on the same subject. There just aren’t enough people that have this beast on this forum (to my knowledge) ….or at least they never responded to my specific SI6 queries over the years….to give their comparative experience.

At last count there were only 10x Si6 models for sale in the UK!

I like both petrol and diesel 3.0L D5's...both have their distinct advantages and disadvantages. If I could have found an Si6 around anywhere when I was looking...as my private daily driver, I'd have been sorely tempted. The Si6 sounds positively refined compared to the grumbly, agricultural rattle of a 3.0L diesel.

Like Wolfpack said, diesel or petrol in a 2017-2019 D5...it's a Land Rover, it does what it says on the tin (with bits occasionally falling off). In the end, you have to accept the headache of owning one to buy one...sensibly boring gets you a Volvo XC90 or a BMW X3/X5 Rolling Eyes

But...as for choices, I'm a farmer (retired) and I buy diesel in bulk to fill a 15,000L tank...it's simply a matter of economics which informs the choice of engines in my private daily drivers.

The only time I pay pump prices for fuel is if I head south on holiday...even then I cheat. I stop at my sister's farm near Callander for a catch-up on the gossip, free B&B and to fill up for free if I'm going any further Wink
