Access to Storage Behind Climate Control Panel

My vehicle has developed a fault in that when the button at the top centre of the climate control panel is pushed, to get access to the storage area behind the panel, it does not open.

It is noted that if the button is pressed and at the same time, with the other hand, one of the knobs on the panel is pulled slightly then it will open.

It seems that when the button is pushed the latch is pulled down, but once it is released it pops back into the retaining slot before the spring loaded mechanism has a chance to open up the storage area.

Have others experienced this issue and if so what is the solution.

The easy solution (worked on mine) was to lightly grease the small rubber pegs inside the opening, you'll know exactly what I mean when you look inside. They're small, rubber and pointy on the upper sides of the aperture...

A very light application of some lithium or silicone grease on those rubber pegs stops the door from sticking when pressing the button...I applied a smear of lithium grease on mine a year ago...the door hasn't stuck since Thumbs Up

Thanks Mole HD, for your response.

The conclusion reached was that when the button on the climate control panel is pushed, to access the storage area behind it, the latch is withdrawn from its keeper slot, but when the button is released (no longer pushed) before the cones can push it out far enough the latch goes back into keeper slot.

It was found that just 2 layers of masking tape on the cone impact point on the velvet material on the back of the climate control panel was enough to get the storage area to open normally when the button was pushed (and released), so the latch did not go back into the keeper slot.

A permanent solution is still to be established.

The following possible causes for the problem are identified:

    1. The rubber cones have compressed slightly due to the pressure on them when the storage area is closed or are not as springy at lower temperatures.

    2. The velvet material on the back of the climate control panel has compressed slightly due to the pressure on it when the storage area is closed.

    3. The spring mechanism that opens the storage area, in a damped constant speed manner, becoming sluggish due to lack of use and/or lower temperatures.

    4. Increased friction in the hinges due to lack of use and/or lower temperatures resulting in reduced initial opening speed.

    5. The latch returning quicker than it previously did once the button was no longer pushed.

The answer is to buy new rubber cones from LR or just buy these and stick on your lid

This trick with a nylon or rubber washer worked for me. Install the washer under the lip of the rubber bumper on each side.

Yes, I could buy new rubber cones from LR, but I suspect the problem in another 18 months or so, unless LR have had the part modified to solve the problem. Do you happen to know what the part number is.

With regards to the black round self adhesive feet 12.5 x 4.2mm, I do have some clear self adhesive round kitchen cabinet door soft close bumpers 12.7 x 3.5mm which are very similar that I could try.

Thanks STOAT, the nylon or rubber washer with a sector cut out looks like a good approach to resolving the problem. What size of washer did you use (outside diameter, inside diameter and thickness)?

That the cones have a waist implied that they may be push into a hole and waists on the cones holds them in position. Did you try to remove them?

I think M6 x 12mm x 1-2 mm nylon or rubber washer would suffice. Just pull the rubber cone out a couple of mm on its stalk and slide the modified washer behind. The quoted part number for the washer is LR113781.
