New Here (But Not To The LR Family)

    Hi All,

I'm new to the forum. Been looking around and getting some good info and tips.
    I'm looking to buy a Disco5.

I've been looking at 20 plate Landmark Edition.
    72k miles.

    Anything to look out for?

I'm a little worried at all of the 'needs new engine' talk on here. At 72k, i'm i past that risk? or in the sweet spot or what?

The engine problem primarily relates, but not exclusively, to the 2lt engine.

As for the milage, it has not direct relevance I am afraid.

If it comes with the LR named warranty, then that’s your get out of jail card, if not I wouldn’t touch it imho.

Usual Land Rover rules apply with the D5, change your oil every 5k miles rather than LR's recommended 10k miles between service intervals...goes without saying. Despite the variety of issues with the 2.0L Ingenium engine which is a disaster, the 3.0L TD6 and the SDV6 are generally pretty good engines over all if they've been looked after.

72k miles is around average mileage for the year you're looking at...make sure any D5 that you consider has had the timing belts replaced, if they've not been done... steer well clear or have the dealer replace them before any sale. They need to be replaced at 110k miles or 84 months (7 years) and replacing both timing belts as part of the servicing schedule will cost you an average of £1.5k at an indy garage or well north of £2k at a dealership unless they're replaced under warranty...
There's also more than a few issues with leaking windscreens on earlier models judging by feedback on here and elsewhere, be aware of it.

Have a look through the service history for any problematic or recurring issues...same with the MOT history. A full dealer service history means very little in the scheme of things, I'd take one with loads of receipts from a decent indy garage over being Land Rover dealer serviced...but that's just me. I've got a workshop full of shiny tools since it used to be my day job and I'd trust a good mechanic over a dealership 'technician' any day of the week.

I've really enjoyed my D5 (2017 3.0L TD6) in the year I've owned it, it's certainly a step up from the D4 I had previously and besides niggly issues like two of the window regulators failing which I replaced...it's been absolutely fine and does exactly what it says on the tin. I do all my own servicing and maintenance since I'm way fussier and proactive maintenance wise than any Land Rover technician. If you're not handy with a set of spanners though, like Darras quite rightly said...get one with a Land Rover named warranty, it's probably the best advice you'll get. Thumbs Up

    .

Great info from both of you guys. Thanks. This doesn't come with LR warranty, but does come with an RAC warranty (I've read a little bit about with no horror stories that i can see / find).

Love my D5 and hope you can get this one. BUT, I would check what the max claim value is on the RAC Warranty. i.e. if it's something low like £2k, that is going to be useless in the event of an engine failure (which I hope you don't get!).

Personally, I wouldn't want to own a D5 without the OEM's own warranty, and I wouldn't own the car at all without warranty cover in place, so ensure it's something you can extend/renew.

Unless, as I said, you are a risk taker or happy to pay less, but know some repairs might be costly.

Hi JK. Thanks for help. RAC cover is £5k per claim. I'm tiptoeing around this one at the moment, but its right in my price range. Thanks again for the heads up tho. Any other things i should be looking out for, give me a shout. i'm hear to learn.

One thing i am intrigued about is the boot on the Disco. There seems to be scuffing on the inner trim. Highlighted in photo. I've seen this on at least 3 or 4 cars i've viewed. Something to worry about?

Uploading images on here is not easy - I kinda figure it out as I go... it is possible, if you persist!

When you say scuffing on the interior trim, that sounds like scuffing from people loading stuff for the tip and the like, or a dog clawing or scratching....?

I love my D5. The second I've owned, and it's a phenomenal family car and long distance cruiser. Taken mine the far north of Scotland and the southern tip of Italy, and it never feels like a long journey. Few cars you can say that about.

My two D5s have also been mostly trouble free, though I've got a £900 service coming next week so I'll see if that throws anything up! Bizarrely, on my current car, I've had the battery changed by Land Rover Assist (The AA) three times under warranty. Go figure?! I call them out to low battery problems, they find issues, and just replace it each time at their cost. Quite bizarre! My car is only 2 1/2 years old and 33k miles.

Sorry scuffing on the left and right side where the Boot Trim contacts the lower trim.

Common fault but unusual on both sides ( I believe).

Mine had it when I bought the car 6 years ago….not done anything to it, and it’s no worse now.

Reassuring! Thanks very much. Yeah i think each one of the cars i've seen had both sides in this condition.
