    Headlight stopped working

    Hello All,

About 3 weeks ago I had one headlight (right hand side) start flickering and then stopped working.

Initially I thought that it was the headlight itself, so I ordered some replacement ballasts for it (I have the LED headlights).

These arrived and today I took the headlight out and replaced the ballasts. Sadly it made no difference.

So… I took the other headlight out and switched them round. The right hand headlight works fine in the left hand side of the car and the left hand headlight (now connected to the right side) doesn’t work.

So…. The issue isn’t the actual headlight.

I have tried checking the earth point just behind the headlight and it seems fine.

I cannot find any fuses for the headlights.

Can anyone help me find out what the issue is?

    Thanks in advance.

    Nick

    Same.

The garage replaced the headlamp, but the fault persisted. Eventually they discovered it was a rusty earth strap under the offside wing.

Thanks Darras… do you by any chance have a photo of where that stray is located so that I can check it?

I followed the wiring from the light socket and one cable does go to the one of the 3 earthing points in the front wing. Is this what you mean?

No I don’t have a photo unfortunately, the garage repaired it, but I think you’re on the right track.

Ok… just out of interest… they they charge you for the headlight that wasn’t needed?

I am taking my D5 to an indie next week because I have checked the earth points and they seem good.

I don’t want to start messing with the electrics so that is when I take it to an expert.

No, it was all carried out under warranty including the unnecessary replacement of a perfectly good headlamp at roughly £2k.

Thing is they put the headlight in and declared it was fixed. It was a couple of weeks later I had to take it back in again when the problem still persisted and the corroded earthing point was then found.

I didn’t ask them about the headlamp. Thought it best to stay quiet rather than probe, there again it wasn’t my fault.

OK... ended up taking the D5 to JLR (there is only one independent garage in Luxembourg that will deal with Land Rovers, and they didn^t want to do it... they said that they would call me back and never did. This means they have lost a client... sorry https://www.luxadventures.lu/... you should have called me back!!)

Turns out the issue was an earth strap (as you pointed out it could be earlier).

They have resolved this for me, and I can collect her this afternoon.

Once I have paid the €600+ invoice of course!!

Not cheap, but they did do it quickly... and I will be glad to get my D5 back!!

Nothing is cheap on a Land Rover.

I shouldn’t have got the Earth repaired on the warranty tbh. It’s excluded, but one of these things you hear quite often as corroding.

I am not sure how the dealership got round it. I didn’t ask, but if they had billed me, I’d have grassed them off about the unnecessary replacement headlamp.

All in all, I am delighted to be shot of the car. I picked up a new MG HS Trophy Phev for £27k, discounted by £8k, and I am very happy with it.

More room than a Disco Sport, just a bit less than the D5, You sit high up and it has all the things you’d want like adaptive cruise, surround cameras even a preheat function.

It’s very nippy and you get 75 miles on a full charge, on the petrol side of things, I filled it up once in 1k miles and it still has a range of over 500 miles left, then there’s the 7 year warranty, 1st year service £200 and they bung in free AA recovery if done via a MG garage.

If I’d gone for another D5, it would have cost me over £50k extra. I’d far rather give that sort of money to help the kids get a house deposit tbh. Thumbs Up

I understand that the D5 is not for everyone, and I honestly haven't been back to JLR for about 4-5 years!!

I do MUCH of the work on it myself, but I don't know a lot about the electronics and so I don't want to mess that up.

I have kept the D5 (I bought it new) and I would be very sad to get rid of it. It has honestly been a fantastic vehicle. I do a lot of towing (right up to 3500kg!!) because I have horses, and there isn't really another vehicle on the market that can do as much as well as the D5.

I also have the Def 110 P400, and while it is a lovely vehicle, the ride of the Disco is actually better, and if I am doing long trips, I prefer the Discovery.

The engine in the P400 is fantastic though!!!!!!

Fair enough, finger crossed your car behaves itself now.

I was on my 6th or 7th new Land Rover., so I am not sure the comment about the car might not be for me is applicable particularly as I’d kept that one almost 7 years.

When people like me and there’s plenty others in the same boat, who had been faithful to the brand over 20 years then leave, perhaps LR should be asking themselves why if indeed they care one jot.

    I agree 100%!!!

    I have been using LRs since 2004!! I have had 2x D2, D3, RRS (gen1), L322, D5, New Def 110 & Jag e-Pace.

In some ways I regret not buying the Ineos when I bought the Defender.

The problem isn't the vehicles... it is the service behind them.

Having said that... for once the dealership did in fact get the issue sorted very quickly.

I am going to collect the D5 later this evening.
