Car Camping in a Discovery 5
Have any of you done it? What setup have you used and is there a way to put the car into a kind of sleep mode so the ecu/bcu’s shut down so the tailgate can stay up to use a tailgate tent without the battery going flat? Pics would be great of your setups.
Thanks

I used a Latitude Pioneer roof tent and side awning with the D2 and D4 but haven't been camping in the D5. Mrs Mole had a serious riding accident a few years ago which put an end to our wild camping forays. Besides that, leaving the tailgate open (or the doors) on an unmodified D5 is a no go anyway, and if the keys are in the car or within 3m, the car won't go to sleep even if you lock it.
Looks like the D5 wasn't meant for going wild camping unless you rig up a leisure battery, use a small petrol generator or run a solar powered trickle charger. Either that or just go to an expensive fixed campsite with mains power outlets and plug your Ctek charger in on service mode to top the battery up for the duration...the D5 is a bit of a Chelsea tractor really, certainly when compared with the D4 for camping. Definitely not for off piste or wild camping at any rate, at least not without some off-road modification to handle the battery drain.
Hard or soft-top roof tents with a side awning are a fantastic option, we used that Latitude Pioneer for many years and genuinely loved it but you really need a full size roof rack...I wouldn't trust a set of roof bars for a roof tent, at least not a decent sized one and you can't fit a side awning onto roof bars in any case.
