Water Leak Adjacent to Rear View Mirror
My Discover 5 has fixed front and rear panoramic roofs and as it was first registered in September 2024, is thus still covered by warranty.
Last week while driving a whistling sound occurred when driving over 50 mph, which sounded as if a window was open.
It was found that placing a finger on plastic housing behind the rear view mirror caused the pitch of the sound to vary and by pressing a finger on the windscreen adjacent to plastic housing behind rear view mirror also caused the pitch of the sound to vary.
Three days later in the early hours of the morning the car alarm went off. It was raining heavily at the time and it was discovered that a considerable amount of water had leaked into the vehicle via the area adjacent to the plastic housing behind the rear view mirror and fallen onto the display and the climate control panel.
After drying off the water that had leaked into vehicle using towels, it was found that at speeds of over 50 mph the whistling sound had gone.
However, yesterday while driving on the motorway a sound like an open window (but not whistling) was heard coming from the area adjacent to the plastic housing behind the rear view mirror.
The vehicle has been booked into the main dealers for this to be fixed next week.
It is suspected that the bonding at the top centre of the windscreen has failed. But is it as simple as that?

Yes it does sound like it is the common bonding issue at the top of the screen.
When mine was refitted there was no bond at all across the top of the screen and the sealant just lifted away with the screen.
If you want to check just apply some light pressure to the inside of the screen at the top pushing out.
If any movement is present the screen is not fixed to the car.
This needs sorting quickly before the water starts to cause other issues.
I'm not sure why LR have not resolved this at the factory, it can't be that hard to make sure a screen is fitted properly.
All the glass companies can manage it!

Did they just take out the original screen, remove what was left of the bond on both the screen and the car and then just rebond it in or did the fit a replacement screen?
Who did they get to do the work and how long were you without the vehicle?

I just had a local glass firm refit my original screen.
Yes, they just cleaned and then re-primed the screen and car and installed the screen.
They did say there was a risk it may break whilst being removed but it was fine.
This was probably helped by the fact it wasn't bonded to the car anyway!
It only cost £180.00 and they did it whilst I waited.
I could have taken it to LR but mine is now out of warranty, being a late 21 car, and life is too short to deal with LR unless you really need to.
They would have wanted me to pay for the diagnosis which would have been more than just having the screen refitted.
They have just had my car for three weeks to sort out a software update issue and they still gave it back with the remote app not working which was working fine previously.

Don't wait till next week, get LR assist out straight away, they will temporarily seal, book at dealers and provided a courtesy car for duration. When mine leaked last year it was at dealers 8 days whilst they waited for a new screen. If it leaks again, it will probably be major wiring damage.

Yes I probably should have got LR Assist out. However, I have taken steps to catch water getting into the vehicle to prevent damage to internal electrical/electronic components. Surprisingly, it has not leaked since the initial leak. However, on the odd occasion when I have driven it driven you can hear the sound of air getting into the vehicle (like a window is slightly open) at the top centre of the windscreen

During the manufacture of the vehicles I would expect a robotic arm to apply the adhesive (after both surfaces have been appropriately primed), followed by robotic placement of the screen on the vehicle.

Check the underside of the front carpets, on mine the water did run along top of screen then down A pillar and soaked carpet before it started coming out of the mirror housing.

I believe it is an issue with the primer on the body side.
That would certainly make sense with mine the way the screen came away.
I just can’t work out why the issue hasn’t been resolved, it’s been well documented for years.

On my car, (leak was the windscreen above the drivers sun visor) the propensity to leak was influenced by the angle the car was parked and the intensity of the rain. Bizarrely it leaked worse when it drizzled and never while driving! The fault was the primer lifting ….but on the glass, the first time.
Yes 4 years later it reappeared. I am somewhat skeptical that it’s just a robotic primer fault during manufacture, as windscreen technicians seem to suffer the same issue when replacing them given the number of repeat leaks that reoccur.
