Firstly, welcome!
Plenty to read on here, but I'd just say, the horror stories on here show one side of the picture, and there's plenty of people who don't come on forums and post, who've not suffered the same experiences.
I don't want to curse myself, but on my second D5 (been driving them since 2018), and the 3.0 litre diesel engines I've had both times have been solid. I wouldn't buy or want to own a car with the smaller diesel engine, as my bro-in-law did that and he wasn't lucky and had two engine replacements.
But IMHO, the D5 3.0-litre diesel is a fantastic car to drive and own. I just would never want to own one outside of Land Rover official extended warranty (just in case!).

Genuinely don't know the answer to that question. They perhaps do, upon inspection maybe. But sounds more likely that you'd end up with a third-party warranty.
I'm sure they are also decent, I've just sat waiting for my car to be serviced too many times and heard the faff that a third party warranty causes in the service dept., as they don't have the same knowledge of it, how it works, and what it's going to cover, which has always put me off. With the LR warranty (which is expensive - I think I pay something like £1,400 a year atm), you have the reassurance the dealer just handles it. Plus, i get mine with LR Assist added in (a few quid extra), and means if you have a breakdown issue, or problem on the driveway, you can get a LR mobile tech out to you. Yes, they are still a member of The AA, but they are a LR expert, and arrive in a vehicle loaded with LR spare parts, so they can often get you up and running when a standard AA guy/girl might not have the right parts on board.
Whatever you buy, good luck, and if it is a D5, come back and tell us all about it!

Welcome.
Firstly a lot of the major engine issues revolved around the 2L diesels. The 3L models are a different fish.
I use that term jovially, because there are a few recurring faults and issues with most D5, the most common seems to be leaking windscreens and the potential knock on effects with wet electronics.
A wander through the faults and fixes section of this forum may give you things to discuss with the vendor and check with 3rd party warranty coverage.
Most of us love the experience of the D5 but at times it’s a bit like a delinquent teenager…a mind of their own and getting things expensively wrong.
The final point would be to avoid at all costs JLR dealerships provided you have a good LR independent /specialist car garage locally. Dealers (to flip the old FU slogan) will make a drama out of a crisis…with delays, prevarication and excess cost.

If you’re serious about buying one, bear in mind it’s not the vehicle to have unless you have deep pockets.
My one got to 7 years old. I was looking at £1,620 for the warranty, a service at £800, tyres at £200 per corner and discs and pads all round at £1,600 - a biannual event and that was ignoring tax and insurance plus it was on its third engine at just over 60k miles,
Finally, depreciation is a factor with all cars, but LRs really do drop like a stone.
Anyway, it’s your money, some things you can put a price on. I did and I sold it on which I am glad I did. 👍

That’s a lot of expense? Why the 3 engines? Insurance is roughly what I pay now tax will be £200 I always shop around for servicing and repairs although I’ve replaced numerous brake pads and discs by myself over the years they’re all pretty much the same set up tyres can also vary in price my XC60 has 20” wheels. With all due respect I think when you quote prices for jobs and parts it’s all about shopping around 😊

Regarding the engines. I’d had a 2lt from new and had it regularly serviced, but it suffered from loss of compression, the symptoms were different on each occasion, but it never seized as such. Each time the cost was about £14-£16k.
Yes, you can shop around for servicing and repairs. I think I was given a quote of about £1k for the brakes from an independent. I was tempted.
However, I kept with LR for everything because, despite the legalities of having it done elsewhere, then LR are fabled for refusing any borderline goodwill if needed, if not.
That was evident when I was given an extended car hire by LR for 8 weeks whilst an engine was being replaced. Their head office executive made it know that had I not been loyal to them, they wouldn’t have given me a car for that length of time. I think under the LR named warranty, you’re limited to a week or so off the top of my head.
It was also dragged up they’d done this when I asked them to reseal the front windscreen at a cost of £150. They told me they weren’t paying despite it being a known manufacturing defect.
Thats how petty they can be, that’s all I am saying, I doubt whether £150 would have kept the executive office in custard creams for a week! 🙄

I think it can, but before the warranty starts, you have to pay a main dealer to inspect the car.

Chadders, you are so right about sites posting complaints and faults rather than praising their purchases, There are plenty of good D5's about and despite some posts on here claiming inflated costs of spares, things like filters, brakes, window regulators etc are fairly cheap and easy to source, there are also many indies that understand the D5 and have the knowledge and technology to carry out repairs to a good standard, in some cases better than main dealer, the 3.0 litre is the one to go for but full history is paramount, You can now get a good spec car for not a lot of money.

Thanks my mantra has always been buy cheap buy twice but at the same time I won’t be taken the p155 out of when it comes to paying for stuff. After all someone has to pay for the free coffee and biscuits at a main dealer 😂
so if there’s any specific threads you can point me to so I don’t just ask the same questions as everyone else looking to buy a Disco 5 knock yourself out!
