Hybrid is on its way, LR are working on a new hybrid system based around a 295bhp ingenium petrol engine with a realistic EV range of 20-30 miles but will probably feature in the RRS first.
Jaguars all electric I-Pace should arrive in 2018 so I would imagine electric LR vehicles shouldn't be to far behind.

Radical hybrid.
The implementation of a Land Rover hybrid that I would like is based on the Tesla Battery Electric Vehicle.
That is each axle comprising an electric motor driving the pair of wheels via a differential.
In the Land Rover the battery pack would be reduced to half the size used by Tesla and a Generator installed as the Prime Mover.
Result engine always running at most efficient speed, battery pack load caps. Ultimate Automatic Transmission.
This setup is has been used in many High Powered Railway Locomotives (English Electric Deltic).

Why bother with a diff and drive shafts? why not simply have electric motors on the hubs.

Very good point AndrewS.
I highlighted this arrangement because it is currently in use on a "production" vehicle all be it very small scale production in the TESLA S P100D dual motor all wheel drive.

Could it be that having a motor in each hub adds a lot of complexity and weight and the technology isn't yet up to it? I have an "expression of interest" payment down on a Tesla X but am hanging back to wait for more details of the I-Pace. Problem with Tesla X is that prices start at £71,000 for the lower capacity/ range version that will be available here yet there are cheaper versions available in USA and Europe........ I-Pace starts at £55000 for a similar output. Also against the Tesla in UK is that north of Manchester there is next to no backup, a sales outlet in Edinburgh and that's it!

Tim - you'd better add £10k more to that. Tesla longer taking orders for the lower powered X and there has been a price rise now so well over £80k

Yep, I had an email from them yesterday, looks like if JLR don't bring out an electric RRS Coupe in 2018 I'll be looking at an iPace once all the technical issues have been found by the first adopters.........
