Are D5 sales starting to flag?
I thought LR had orders well into next year for D5 but have just been passed the rental car parking lots at Edinburgh Airport and every rental company had 3 or 4 D5's waiting to be rented out, Hertz had the most at 10 and most looked like they were Santorini Black HSE's

Being on rental fleets is a new one to me. I wonder if these will be"O" plated "Management cars". The frequent misunderstanding about "Management cars" is that they are all driven by LR "Management" as part of their package. Rather, they are cars that LR owns and then "Manages", they may be LRE vehicles, LR Assist breakdown loan cars or now, possibly, even rental fleet cars.
It's usual for other manufacturers to register rental company cars to themselves and then lease them to hire companies, thus avoiding "Hertz", or similar, being the first owner on the V5.
It's a bit concerning as this is what the volume manufacturers used to do just to register excess production and keep the production line rolling when demand was slack. Eye watering discounts were simply collateral damage, but all of those low mileage used cars had to come to market at some point, devaluing the new stuff it was inevitably competing against.

They were indeed mostly O for the first letter of the plate

One of the things that I have been pretty surprised at is I have yet to see one on the road. Yeah I know they have only been able to be sold for about a month now for my area, but I can tell you I live in a very very LR saturated area where I know they sold a few at the dealer but as said, I have yet to see one where as I must see about 50 LR's of some kind a day.
I can tell you one thing for me was that it was kinda surprising is how fast the car got really pricey really quick.
For me here a base HSE with a V6 petrol starts out at a little over 56k, but man just even for slightly upgraded wheels is $1,200, then $2,150 for the seven seat and then 1,220 for the tan seats (does come with other things though), then $850 for the only one audio upgrade possible and basically your up to a tick over a 63k car before you have even picked one single thing for an accessory such as even the Capability package to get you the locking difs which is a little over another $1,200.
Basically when I got done with my build I had over 4k in base upgrades, and over 12k in options...so the final total was over 74k.
So that was over $18k more just to outfit the car the way I wanted it.
Then you throw in taxes and registration, plus the insurance and yearly taxes on a 74k car, and it really starts to hit you just how much money you are spending on this car.
Is is a great car by all means yes....is it worth 74k, guess that is debatable but for me I would say its more close to yes then not in mainly I think there is a lot more under the skin of this car then most would understand..is it a better "value" then other comparable cars...guess again is in the same boat but I would have to say you definitely are paying a certain number just because it has the LR name on it.
But still at the end of the day when its all said or done, I'm looking at a very pricey car here and so you really have to think about that.
For me I pretty much knew I wasn't going to get a 2017, but then was looking at a 2018 mainly as I just needed to save more for for the DP so my monthly payments would stay low.
But even now I have kinda shelved that idea at least for the immediate moment as the more I think about it...I just don't know how I would feel about spending over $75,000 on a car plus all the added taxes and insurance to drive it...all for something I would say is just primarily used for general transportation.
Guess what all that adds up to for my point might be that while the initial start of the build of this car might be a value, and while its great that you can get the many options you can get in the higher priced cars such as the RRS or FFRR, as those options are just a costly as they are on those you end up getting really close to the cost of one of those...and I can say at least for my area this means you are a spend the money for the status of it customer, and if you are, you are going to want the thing everyone is going to see is a pricey Land Rover without even thinking about it which with the big Discovery words on the front, the total new body style and other things the Discovery is, for many I think the Discovery just is not that car.

It's getting as bad as Disco4.com over here, all these conspiracy theories that "LR are worried" and "they ain't selling because I've not seen one"
The DS was slow to sell now it's the best selling model in the range, the D5 has only been officially on sale since March, with only 2 Diesel engines and a thirsty petrol, its facing an anti diesel campaign and higher VED. It's now into Range Rover money so it will never sell in the large numbers the D3/4 once did, in its last year the D4 only sold 55,000 world wide.
After its first year in production will give a better view.

Trust me I am not trying to bash the car or the model or Land Rover at all.
For me I don't want anything bad to happen to any of that, or anyone who might buy one or want one.
All in all I personally think the D5 is probably one of the most encompassing of all things anyone could want in a SUV, its just that is seems to come at a cost and so I was just pointing out that due to that and for other reasons it might not be selling as much as people would have thought at this point.
Am not trying to create any conspiracy theories, just letting people know the thoughts of someone who has looked into the car a great deal and why I personally have decided to shelf the idea for the moment.
To mention by saying on the shelf is meant to say I have not completely decided not to get one, its just where I am at the moment with the idea, but should some things change for me its still possible I would get one.

I just think it's a bit early to say how good/bad the sales are

Yes, I didn't really say that in any of my points as I am not that familiar with any of the sales of Land Rovers either now or over the years, so really didn't want to say something one way or another.
But if I were to take a guess I would for sure agree to that and guess that there is defiantly more time needed to conclude.
I sometimes wonder if any of the new Discovery's lines and shape is going to carry over to the other lines.
Yes its a Land Rover, but you have to admit if you just saw the car and never knew it was, you might have to think about it.
But if the RRS and FFRR get more of the looks the D5 has in years to come, I think it will become more directly identifiable.

Given the RR, RR Sport, Discovery and I presume Velar all come down the same line and the overall capacity is constrained until the new plant is built I am not sure they will be dumping stock in the daily rental fleet in the way the volume manufacturers do. I would suspect some other explanation like a specific event or contract that requires the cars. Still supply constraint from my local dealer, I know they would take any stock they could get their hands on. The brokers are not really showing material discounts (£1.4k on a D5 and about £4k on a RR Sport) so it doesn't look like a load of stock floating around.
Who knows on the sales, but not sure this is in indication one way or the other.
