Euro V1 technology to be retro fitted.

Amminex chosen to clean London’s toxic air

New clean diesel technology from Amminex will play a key role in solving the London air quality crisis by lowering the NOx emissions from buses. The ASDS technology will not only bring the vehicles up to Euro VI emission standard, but remove NOx under real-world driving conditions.

Transport for London (TfL) has named Amminex Emissions Technology in a framework agreement as a supplier to the NOx Abatement Programme announced recently by London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan. Around 5,000 buses are to be retrofitted with NOx-reducing solutions ahead of the creation of the world’s first Ultra Low Emission Zone in 2020.

The retrofit programme is good news for the Londoners, who on a regular basis are exposed to NOx gases surpassing the health limit.

In making the announcement, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “We know that pollution from our roads is a major contributor to London’s toxic air. That’s why we are working so hard to introduce new clean buses on our streets and why we are continually looking for innovative ways to clean up the most polluting buses. There’s no doubt that by cutting the emissions of more than half of the fleet by up to 95 per cent, this innovative retrofit programme is going to make a huge difference to Londoners.”

Adressing the air quality crisis at its core
The ASDS technology from Amminex is a new way of virtually eliminating toxic NOx gases from the exhaust of diesel engines. It works particularly well in slow, urban driving, addressing London’s current air quality crisis at its core.

“The air quality crisis in London calls for urgent action. According to the UK Government, each pound spent on NOx retrofit solutions will save 2.5 pounds in health costs. Our solution will only make that ratio better due to the improved NOx reduction in congested driving and the immediate NOx reduction achieved when hybrid buses are shifting between electric and diesel mode,” says Annika Isaksson, CEO of Amminex.

55 Euro V buses from Metroline have recently been upgraded to ASDS technology which has tripled the NOx reduction level, in real world driving conditions without further changes to the vehicle or the catalyst onboard. This supports a policy of responsible purchasing by not scrapping fully functional catalysts that includes rare precious metals, and is saving the taxpayers an expensive catalyst exchange, while still getting a major NOx reduction.

The independent testing company Millbrook confirms that the ASDS technology on a typical London double-decker easily meets the retrofit target of up to 95 per cent NOx reduction by demonstrating 97.8 % NOx reduction, and thus meeting Euro VI NOx standards. Accumulated data from the first million kilometers driven shows that the technology has saved the Londoners from breathing more than 18 tons of NOx in just a few months.

Beneficial to the public as wells as the bus operators
“Simply put, our solution is better for the bus operators as well as the Londoners. ASDS will lower the total costs for the operators while cleaning the air more efficiently than our competitors do,” says Lars Tinggaard Johannesen, Retrofit Product Line Manager at Amminex.

Bus operators in Copenhagen and London verify that ASDS eliminates problems with crystallization and deposits in the exhaust, thereby maximizing vehicle uptime and lowering maintenance costs.

In December 2016, Amminex was bought by the global automotive supplier Faurecia, in order to accelerate the deployment of the ASDS technolog for commercial vehicles and industrial applications around the world.

“The framework agreement in London is another opportunity to demonstrate the superior NOx reduction of ASDS in urban driving conditions. ASDS is the the most cost-efficient way for a city to address the NOx problem. We are pleased that London has taken this decision following on from Copenhagen and Seoul who are also deploying ASDS technology,” says Christophe Schmitt, Executive Vice President of Faurecia Clean Mobility.

ASDS-equipped vehicles around the world have driven well over 30 million kilometers, saving the environment a massive 360 tons of NOx. This is documented by the NOx Tracker, a special monitoring tool delivering complete transparency of actual NOx reduction and system efficiency for both individual vehicles and entire fleets.

“Fleet operators can use the NOx tracker to optimize operations and service. Authorities and municipalities can document value for money, and via the LIVE NOx Tracker app, the public can even view aggregated real-time data of how clean the exhaust is,” says Annika Isaksson.

    About Amminex
Amminex Emissions Technology is a Danish cleantech company founded in 2005. Our vision is “A clean world driven by clean engines”, and our innovative technology provides cost efficient emissions solutions globally for diesel driven applications to enable superior and transparent De-NOx performance in real world operation. We develop our products for both first-fit and retrofit, and with quality meeting industry standards. Amminex is owned by French automotive supplier Faurecia (91.5 %) and Nordea-Fonden (8.5 %).

    About ASDS
The main invention behind the Ammonia Storage and Delivery System, ASDS, is the ability to safely store gaseous ammonia in salt called AdAmmine. When heated, the salt releases the gas, which is distributed in precisely the right quantity to the exhaust and SCR catalyst, thereby converting toxic NOx to harmless nitrogen and water. ASDS has best-in-class emissions performance in urban driving, after cold starts, in cold climates, and in stop & go-driving. The technology is always on and has better fuel economy and CO2 footprint than the competitors due to no need for exhaust heat management.
