• I've had no problem with this. You don't have to pay for Route.
  
  Maybe it is worth deleting the Route app and re-installing it?

• There is a clear plastic layer over both rear screens - it looks permanent but equally could be just a protective layer.

• Once you insert a SIM card everything is enabled. You need to download apps for your phone, and once you have signed in to everything there are a lot of new features available.
