N071 - Loss of Spare Wheel
Looks like LR are trying to put Uncle Ray out of business.......:
Subject:
Loss of Spare Wheel
Publication No.: N071
Model: Discovery (LR)
Model Year: 2017 - 2018
VIN Range: from 000515
Date of Issue: 02/02/2018
Expiry Date: 28/02/2020
To:
National Sales Company and Authorized Repairers - United Kingdom
For the Attention of:
The Managing Director
Copies To:
The Service/Aftersales Director/Manager The Parts Director/Manager
Related information:
This bulletin is valid for two years only. Repairs must be complete and warranty claims accepted for payment prior to the expiry date at the top of this bulletin.
Dear Colleagues
A limited number of Discovery 2017 and 2018 Model Year (MY) owner/drivers may report a concern whereby the spare wheel is missing from the underside of the vehicle and may have been stolen.
Investigations have identified that spare wheels are being targeted, and on occasion, are being removed from the spare wheel winch by force. Therefore, external factors are causing a level of disappointment and possible inconvenience to the owner/driver of a Discovery vehicle.
The rework is being undertaken to reduce the likelihood of the spare wheel being stolen.
Action to be taken
Unsold vehicles must be repaired prior to handover of the vehicle for retail sale.
At the next opportunity, you are requested to undertake the rework within this bulletin.

John,
Does this re-work apply as a service action to existing vehicles ? Can you post a PDF of the whole bulliten please?
I was in my dealer yesterday talking about spare wheel thefts and they had a customer with a thieved wheel. LR had told them it was now not possible to reach in a cut the winch cable - yet his had gone.
Personally I'll buy a wheel protector from Uncle Ray and if this re-working is applicable to already sold cars then this will add more protection.
EDIT - Just seen on TOPIx its now an outstanding service action so I guess that answers my question. Still would like to read the whole bulletin if possible

I was just about to order a D5 protector from Ray ...guess that this will be resolved at build now.

It's a ten page PDF, so rather difficult to post here!
However, essentially it provides an Uncle Ray like protector, along with some other modifications.
It covers all vehicles, not just new ones.

Just fitted mine off the old D4 19” this afternoon it fits ok on the 22” wheel but bit of a gap but there’s no way they could get in to hack at the cable
Has any one tried removing the jack what a
and the winder connection not good as you need 2 hands to hold and wind the release screw and two hands to pull the wheel out to keep the cable tight so as to not birds nest the cable
so realistically it’s a 4 handed job
will have to make an adaptor I can use with a socket to fit over the top me thinks
The winder would have been better with a nut like on the D4 rather than a bracket with a hole through it bit of a pain and wouldn’t like to do it on the side of the road in the
rain

A 22, 24 and 25mm single hex socket with a bit of downwards pressure on the winder spindle works ok once its loosened a bit.

Might get a piece of tube slot it and weld it to a socket at least then I can use my impact gun on a slow setting with one hand and pull the wheel out with the other ( sounds good in theory

Interesting. Will speak to Shukers. Sounds like it won’t be compatible with Ray’s fitted too then.
