    rear pads easy peasy

    Decided to change my rear brake pads today,
    Set handbrake to service mode
    jack up rear and remove road wheels
    ease the piston fully back
    undo sliding caliper bolts
    move caliper out of way
    remove old pads and stainless shims
    clean off mounting area
    fit new shims
    little smear of ceramic grease on pads
    fit pads in shims
    refit caliper and bolts
    tighten up
    refit sensor (drivers side only)
    fit road wheels
    remove jacks ( axle stands also)
    take out of service mode
    3.0 HSE. climate HUD active diff. elec towbar. FBH and timed climate.Capability plus pack.split TV. surround sound. Intelligent seating. adaptive lights, wade sensing. 360 cameras.pro pack.cooler.advanced tow, auto park,activity key+ more!!!!

    How do you put the hand brake into service mode please
    Namib Orange 1st Edition with black roof and wheels.
    Privacy, tow bar, drive pack, surround camera, heated front & rear seats, auto dim door mirrors, side steps, remote Pro, RSE, arm rest fridge dash cam front and rear.

    Try this.

    Parking Brake Service Activation and Deactivation - Discovery/L462


    No need for adjustment of the parking brake mechanism.


    Activation
    CAUTION: This procedure requires the vehicle in the Park or Neutral position, with the
    ignition turned ON (the engine must be OFF) and the parking brake system
    released.
    NOTE: This procedure allows the parking brake to be released when removing and
    installing new rear brake pads or brake discs.
    1. Press and hold the parking brake switch in the release position.
    2. Wait 2 seconds.
    3. Press and hold the accelerator pedal in the wide open throttle position.
    4. Wait 2 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition Off and back On immediately.
    NOTE: An audible noise will be heard to confirm that the parking brake has been
    released in Service Mode.
    6. Release the accelerator pedal and release the parking brake switch to the neutral position.

    Deactivation
    CAUTION: This procedure requires the vehicle in the Park or Neutral position,
    with the ignition turned ON (the engine must be OFF) and the parking
    brake system in Service Mode.
    Once the rear brake pads or brake discs have been installed, the
    Service Mode must be cancelled.
    7. Press and hold the parking brake switch in the apply position.
    8. Wait 2 seconds.
    9. Press and hold the accelerator pedal in the wide open throttle position.
    10. Wait 2 seconds.
    11. Turn the ignition Off and back On immediately.
    NOTE: An audible noise will be heard to confirm that the parking brake has been
    released from the Service Mode.
    12. Release the accelerator pedal and release the parking brake switch to the neutral position.


    You will hear the park brake mechanism whirring - wait until that stops before you release the accelerator in steps 6. and 12. and a warning display on the dash will display if successfully activated.

    How long have your rear pads lasted? Have you fitted genuine pads?
    Discovery 5 D300 Metropolitan.

    STOAT Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

    Must keep park brake switch and accelerator pedal pressed all the time until brake motor noise finishes.

    Done 37K and still some meat left on old ones although the inner pads were tight in the caliper so suspect outer were wearing quicker.
    Fitted ADJ134241 Blue Print pads, used Blue Print before and happy with quality.
    I plan on changing front and rear discs to cross drilled and grooved and pads to EBC yellow soon so wasn't going to overspec the replacements

    Changing rear pads now and I'm struggling to get the piston in. The parking brake mechanism appears to act on this piston - I have it unplugged to stop it engaging but will it still be prevent the piston being pushed back in?
    Also the piston looks like it may be a "wind in" rather than push in piston and has 3 locating cutouts which is very frustrating as my wind in tool only has adapters for 2!!![/img]

    So I tried that procedure numerous times to no avail. Didn't get the chime or any indication that the process had completed successfully so no idea what I'm doing wrong Sad

    I think it is important to hold the accelerator pedal down and the park brake button in the release position for at least 10 seconds after cycling the ignition off and on (ie after step 5 above) as the park brake mechanism module winds in the piston - you wont hear much going on as it does so.

    You will then hear the chime and see the warning message on the dash.

    Probably not too late to have another go if the park brake module is reconnected.

    Hi Stoat

    Just to clarify if you put the brakes in service mode there is no need to wind the parking brake back. Just looked at a youtube video and the guy removed the motor, then wound the mechanism back manually. So this method winds the mechanism fully back electrically and all you have to do is push the piston back (like the good olds) and jobs done?

    Correct - no need to wind in the park brake mechanism when in service mode.

    Thanks for that. Just been out to the car to test the procedure. Had to do it a few times but did it right eventually.
    Once again many thanks.
    Just another question is there a special procedure for jacking up. Ie access, normal or raised mode just have some memories of great debates in the past on this.

    Just completed rear brake pads. All pretty straight forward. Service mode for handbrake worked a treat. The construction of the brakes different to the YouTube videos of the disco sport. In fact looked very similar to the VW with the clip in sliders. Went for the brembo pads. All went together well.
