That’s my thinking. I need at least one ICE car for now and we could have one electric car also. My wife doesn’t like driving massive cars but has a Mini Clubman which is reasonably practice to be fair for the family. However it’s quite firm riding with no air suspension and lacks other nice luxuries. Hence probably a Disco for me and the family trips, something electric for the wife that I can also drive sometimes as well.
Though with this pandemic I actually have to take her car out occasionally just to stop the battery going flat. It’s not high on my list to change her car when it’s doing nothing much at all currently.

I can't get past the horrendous build quality I've seen in every Tesla I've been in, or seen parked. And the toxic fan culture of Tesla owners turns me off. I don't want to be associated with that. Not to mention, they'll sell you "options" that don't exist, with a promise an upgrade will come later, only never to arrive while your depreciating asset slowly rots.
I think 75% of the other tech people I know here in Silicon Valley have at least one Tesla, if not two. It’s crazy. And they all have issues, but they don’t seem to care. Never understood the hype myself and I’ve been following these guys since they showed of the first Lotus prototype here in 2006.

I'm in the tech business myself so I do see the draw in places. The software updates and getting new features or improvements is always nice though in reverse it does mean they've done things like ship Matrix LED lights on the Model 3 without having any software to make them work yet...
Probably not in a position to point sticks around issues with cars in a Land Rover forum either
Ultimately I just think the best SUV's are still ICE. There's little choice actually in electric land and they are more crossovers with more slippery shapes but less practicality because otherwise they'd only get about 50 miles a charge.
Still interested if the next Disco is a BEV and PHEV though how Land Rover might do it. I think it'll be more electric drive only and more like a range extender if you have the motor but who knows.

have to admit at being a bit shocked that the Defender, a relatively new chassis, doesn’t have at least a PHEV option. they surely thought to accommodate for at least a small battery back under the cargo area… right?

Actually defender can have a PHEV in the 110 format but it’s just the normal battery in the boot. So cannot have the 7 seats with that configuration.
That though is the low tech solution I think when a chassis isn’t properly designed to have a battery.

oops I missed that (see it now). I don’t think we can get the PHEV over here as of yet. Apologies.

No worries and not sure deliveries have hit here either yet. From what I know though you could be waiting an age to get a PHEV Defender. It’s heavily hit from chip shortage plus a long backlog of orders.

had my MY17 TD6 in for regular service yesterday at my dealer and talked to the inventory manager. he said in the US they’ve halted PHEV orders for the time being because of the chip shortage. they also have a list of other options they have to redline for customers as not available when placing new orders.
he said I was lucky I put my MY22 D5 order in when I did because right now, one couldn’t order another one like it. (mine is due in early July now, caught an earlier ship)

Interesting as I might order in the next month but not if I cannot get all the options (Basically have everything on my cars). I’d prefer to wait than have one missing features.

This is another reason why I'll be keeping my current D5 Td6 for a long time - with 47,000 miles on it, it has been rock solid. Maybe a rare Wednesday car right after bonuses were announced or something, but before work ended for the day.
Only problems I've had were the (false) Incorrect DEF quality warning fixed by a software update, the leaky windshield, and the vehicle RF key module failed (luckily I had the Activity Key asthat still worked to get in and lock/alarm). The last one was a 2 hr fix at the dealer. I don't count the early oil change request as that's falsely indicating dilution as well.
I have had more problems on Subarus and Volvos than this Discovery....

That's good to know. Like every brand you have good cars and bad cars. I've had little issue with my BMW's over the years though not without some on a few cars but never anything major.
I had a Mercedes C63S when they first came out so must of had one of the first in the country. Day I picked it up a piece of trim fell off before I got home from the dealers. It had to go in 9 times over 3 months with it spending 1 months of that time in the dealers in total. In the end a few issues just couldn't be sorted so I rejected the car.
That's not to say I think all Mercedes are bad, I just got a bad one. Going to be the same with all makes hence for me the dealer experience is really important when things do go wrong. Mercedes were an awful dealer near me, BMW always treated me perfectly. I just hope if I go down the Land Rover route I get a good dealer as well so if I do end in going in often, the experience still will be good overall.
