    Get a D5 or fix my D4?

    Hi D5-communtity,

    As newbie to this forum (but long time member of d3/4 & defender forums), I would grateful for your input on a decision I need to take.

    Our up-to-now trusty D4 SDV6 HSE Lux has served us well for the last 4 years and 50 thousand miles. We bought it early 2018 with 50k miles on the clock. Last weekend when travelling home from holidays, the engine ate its crankshaft on the Autobahn and we continued our adventure home by train. Our "weekender" TD5 110 is now our family car, which has its charm - up to a point.

    We use the D4 as family vehicle for our family of 5 + big dog. We love the relative comfort, overall space and third row, which allows us prevent our siblings fighting our WW3 during our numerous road trips Smile
    Also the rough-and-tumble design appeals tremendously to the main driver, SWAMBO. We do do mild off-roading, but that it mainly reserved for the Defender.

    Our dilemma is: repair or replace. We know the cost of installing a new engine, but a the same time we were offered a great deal on a 40k miles 2017 TD6 HSE Lux D5 with 2 years Land Rover approved guarantee. And in the exact same colour combo we now have: Montalcino red with Black Pack.

    We test drove the car, loving it in general. The main gripes are "image" and the low second row seats - I do not want car sick children. If we rebuild the D4, I realise we will probably end trading the car in a year or 2 for a D5 (or Rivian R1S) and having some major additional maintenance on the D4 in the mean time.

    As per the defender, I know there are seat risers for sale for the 2nd row of the D5. So that leaves image, which I think we can overcome.

    Any other things to take into account? Any input would be highly appreciated. Cheers!

    I upgraded our 2010 D4 last year to a D5 as I was becoming more and more nervous about ongoing costs, including the crank going bang. While the new D5 is very nice I really wish I had kept the D4 as I loved it, I don’t have the same affinity for the new one.
    Point to note is if you purchase a pre 2021 D5 it will still be running the same engine as the D4 with the associated engine/ crank risks.

    Keep the D4 if you’ve any sense.

    Defender, avoid like the plague. It’s a niche motor.

    Liam, you hava a dilemma. Mine was similar, I opted for the D5, Although the D5 does have a simmilar enine to D3/4 , there do not seem to be too many reports of the earlier issues, I would take great comfot in the 2 year JLR warranty, which you can extend for further peace of mind. The D5 does not feel as 'solid' as the earlier models but thats maybe due to being half a ton lighter, which is refelected in fuel economy and performance, My upgrade was a bit of a culture shock as working on the D3 was relativly easy and cheap whereas the D5 is not DIY friendly except for service items and 'hard' components, anything else and its specialist workshop..
    It is unlikely that there will be available any meaningful diagnostic/programming tools other than JLR's own. GAP and BBS work really well on D4 and before but not D5.
    I am happier with my choice, especially as even today I drove 26 miles of country roads in the lake district/ Cumbria and averaged over 43 mpg.

    Recently been in the same situation after a busted crank . for what its worth D5 cranks have gone and maybe its just a question of time catching up with D5s . I was lucky as my engine was replaced FOC by JLR.

    Whilst waiting to get my D4 back I was convinced I needed to buy a D5 to upgrade ,tried 2 or 3 and glad I did as there are certainly differences between them and the general feeling driving them . D5 I felt cramped in as the sides slope in at the top . . Running gear wise they are pretty much the same. After trying D5s I asked to drive a D4 they had and that made my mind up as my mojo came back
    The other worry for me was all the expensive (to replace) technology on the D5 . Not to mention the very common leaking windscreen which one was showing signs of. Then I got to looking at the cost of buying and depreciation and couldnt work out how a D5 even though only 6 months younger than myD4 could be worth nearly 20k more.
    I am farming and have several friends who have all had D4s over the years not one of them has a D5 anymore although most had tried or owned one. Says a lot to me!
    Dont get me started on Defenders, really surprised LR have a new advertising campaign when you cant get one for 9 months ,or maybe they can see the writing on the wall as the economic situation worsens and get some orders in.

    I had a D5 after a MY 16 D4 and although I liked the D5 it definitely felt and drove different to the D4.
    I had a couple of of problems with the D5 including the leaking windscreen so I got rid of it. Well I relented and ordered new D5 last March. That order got cancelled by LR in November and changed to a MY23 wit a lesser spec. I was told I would not see the new D5 till July this year so I decided to look for another late D4 and bought another D4 Landmark at the end of last year. I believe the ride is so good in the D4 so pleased to be back.
