As well they should. In the US, vehicle annual vehicle taxes are a state-by-state thing. In Texas, you basically only pay for the plates and sticker and the time for the government employee to process the paperwork - less than fifty bucks for passenger vehicles. Some states use vehicle registration fees as road use taxes, but in Texas and most states, road maintenance funds come from fuel tax, which of course Teslas and other EVs don't contribute to.
Add to that, a Model X in its most basic configuration is heavier than a Ford F150 pickup (or a D5) at its maximum curb weight, and a fully loaded Model S is only about 100lbs lighter than a loaded F150.

So what do you guess you pay annually, through fuel taxation ?
I pay € 2550 pa for roadtax. Plus (10.000km) € 800 fuel tax,
currently on average € 1,40 a liter..

US Federal Government charges an excise tax of 18.4 cents per US gallon of petrol and 24.4 cents per gallon of diesel. This goes to support the national interstate system. States charge an average of about another 28 cents per gallon - Texas is 20 cents per gallon for both petrol and diesel. Colorado, where I live, is 22 cents/gal for petrol and 20.5 cents/gal for diesel, plus vehicle registration that is vehicle value based - 2021 registration for my 2017 D5 HSE Td6 was $630. California - unsurprisingly - has the highest fuel tax at 61.2 cents/gal for petrol and 86.9 cents/gal for diesel.
By my calculations I drive about 12,000 miles per year at an average of about 21mpg combined, so that works out to around $260/year in fuel tax (diesel), so a total of about $890 this year, though probably less due to COVID work-from-home time. I figure my diesel has been somewhere around $2.80/gal on average over the last year - right now it's around $3.10/gal.
Texas is about 2.8 times the area of the UK and has 683,000+ miles of 2-lane road the state must maintain (Wikipedia says the UK has about 262,000 miles of roads)...they kind of need every dollar they can get. Colorado alone has about 186,000 miles of roads, tall mountains, and hard winters, so our roads are crap.
By contrast, energy cost per kWh here in the US is around 13.9 cents.

Don't blame you, but I'm across from the small pond, east of the UK..
Known as the Netherlands.. We have 137.000 km of roads..
but the whole country is 200 mls x 100 mls and then even 30% of lakes are included..
But we have 18M inhabitants and 7M cars, most paying around € 1000 pa in roadtax..
Then on avarage € 1 tax a liter. Typical cars drive 10k a year, about 8oo liters, € 800 pa.
So rough guess : € 1800 a car times 7M cars.. 12.6 Billion a year.. From that no more
then 10 billion is used for roads.. .. cars owners are cash cows here..

Having checked....UK fuel duty is £0.5795 per litre regardless of petrol or diesel, then VAT adds another £0.20 - 0.25 per litre, making up around £0.8295 per litre going to the Government out of the selling price of £1.23.
Plus the road tax on my D5 (due to list price all D5 registered after April 2017 attract a higher tax) is £490 per annum, except year one where it is £2245.
SO ignoring year 1 (it wasn't mine then) I am paying about:
£490 annual road tax
16,000 miles at 30MPG = 2431 litres of fuel, tax and duty = £2008
Total £2,498 per annum
If I then believe google there are just under 33million cars registered in the UK (excludes all commercial vehicles, trucks, busses etc which is at least another 5 million)
An average car:
Annual road tax £155 (car less than £40,000 list price)
Average 10,000 miles per year @ 40mpg = 1135 litres = £950 in fuel duty
Total cost per year £1100
33m x £1100 = £36,300,000,000 in tax revenue excluding VAT on purchase price and servicing, spare parts etc.
UK Government figures state they spend £10.94bn on roads per annum of that £36bn.
Interesting comparison to the Netherlands, UK has 4.7x the cars, 2.8x the roads and spends 1.26x the amount on roads.

@Mordred.
I think in NL we deal with soggy soil, subsidence, need for foundations.
So the cost for construction and maintenance is a bit higher then on
mostly rocky soil.
Also I think we have more wear & tear from trucks. In the UK that is
mainly concentrated around the ports.

can't disagree, anything with 40 profile tyres must lost tyres and perhaps wheels on a regular basis over those potholes.
