    Screw in tyre

    Got a warning of low pressure on one of the tyres today and found this Sad Sad

    I think it’s just outside of the repairable area, what do you think? Annoying as only done 4000 miles on these tyres.

    Tyre depot will be able to answer that more assuredly. But if repairable, swop for spare?

    I had one in a similar location, deemed irreparable. And a month later one a little further towards the middle that could be repaired.

    These tyres seem to be screw magnets 😂 I had gone 25 years and close on 500k miles without a puncture previously - including my ten years of running run flats of course!

    Oh dear. Never liked those things,
    Perhaps ok if if you puncture when driving solo but when towing miles from home, trying to find a tyre depot with adequate access/parking can be a pain.

    Ask your local tyre shop if they deal with a professional tyre repair company. I had a screw in a tyre, similar position to yours and they sent it away for repair. They will only fix if it’s safe to do so and the repair is warranted.

    Cost me around £35 (2 years ago) and saved me having to buy a £200+ tyre. Only downside was that it was a 10 day turnaround.

    If it was my tyre I would simply plug it and forget.
    I have done this numerous times on my cars and motorcycles easy diy, tyre centres will always want to sell tyres.

    Screw in tread

    This looks repairable. I had a screw on the radius to the side wall. Had it plugged. Lasted a year until I replaced all 4 tires.

    Yeh we can all do it ! Not worth the risk in my opinion there are reasons its illegal for repair shops to do it in those areas and until you have seen the consequences a new tyre does look expensive! Your insurace invalidated as well if spotted!

    Perhaps your laws are different in US.

    Not really Russian roulette it’s a screw hole, there will be no catastrophic failure by plugging it.

    A puncture on the sidewall itself is not considered repairable in the US. This puncture is on the tread. Worst comes to worst it’ll simply leak. Sometimes you need to repair while you decide if it’s time to get 4 new tires or 4 winter tires... You can’t just replace the tire if the other 3 are worn.

    Its classified as the shoulder and one of the more vunerable parts of a tyre especially with the density of reinforcing wires in that area . Specialist repair is one thing and just plugging without knowing the damage to the structure is another. It always amazes me how gung ho some people can be about their own safety let alone that of others who may suffer as a consequence. They are not allowed to plug that area for reason and not just because they may sell a tyre. Under uk law a plug can only be used within the central 3/4 of the treaded area the reason being nearly all the stress on a tyre at cornering goes into the shoulder area ,and in a D5 those forces are high

    Thumbs Up Popdosh, A very good friend of mine, who retails, fits, amd repairs tyres refused to repair one of my tyes with a similar puncture, he said its because he still wanted my friendship that he refused a repair. there are plenty of replacement tyres at attractive prices on fleabay.
