I’m about to order roof rails and bars for my 2017 D5, we will be using a roof box for when we’re on holiday, are the LR roof bars quiet? As they look quite bulky?
Hi, I'm using the original ones on my MY17. They are bulky but no noise issues. Use them to transport all kinds of stuff, for example the Thule Roof Box (Motion XL).

Likewise - even with the sunroof open I hear more noise from the deflector than I do from the crossbars. I use a Yakima roof box that sometimes gets loaded up to its max weight, and it's rock solid on the LR crossbars at 85mph and in high crosswinds.
Note, however, the LR cross bars are asymmetrical - there is a front and back.
I have used the LR bars and Thule ones and can hestly day that I did not notice any difference in noise.
They were both very quiet.
I got my LR ones for free, so am not going to replace them, but the LR ones have the advantage that they fit the car perfectly where-as the Thule ones have to be "adjusted".
We have a very large Thule box and Thule bars. We found that it makes a considerable difference to the noise levels depending upon where the box is placed (how far forward or how far back).

That's very interesting. Until the new Disco arrives, I'm running an Audi SQ5 with factory roof bars, which are located onto the rails with pins. This forces the very large Thule roof box, to be mounted in a single location, which is horribly noisy. Having used the same roof box, in peace, on three other cars, this is an unpleasant experience in comparison.
