Snow tyres / best sized wheels???
Hello all, I've not even picked up my approved used D5 yet, and I'm planning a snow / winter set of tyres.
On my Disco 4, I had a set of snow Nokian wheels I'd put on before heading over to the Alps. We head over every winter and I know first hand how important snow (non-studded of course) tyres are.
For the D5, I'm looking at a full set of used wheels on eBay, and planning to put tyres if my choosing on. From what I can tell, 20" is the practical size to go for, for what I need. Anyone running winter sets on 21" ?

Winter tires
Nokian Hakkapeliita winter tires on 20” for a year now have worked great for me.
Also have a set of LR approved Koenig Summit chains just in case. Very easy to install and remove.

+1 for the Hakka's.
I've been running Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV the last two winters - good 2nd choice to the Hakka's when they sell out here in Colorado.

A bit superfluous in the UK. More useful would be an outboard motor.
Due to climate change, even in the depths of the Highlands, we don’t get snow apart from way up high on the mountains. It’s been that way for a few years. I’ve never had to use terrain control in anger for anything tbh. We do get ice, but no tyre made to man will stop you on that stuff. We also get rain by the bucketload …..

I'm on my second set for my MY17
first set (2017-2022) 5 winters, 50-60000km).:
275/45R21 110V PIRELLI Scorpion Winter
(excellent in snow, very good in rainy winter conditions)
second set (2022-):
275/45R21 110V XL Michelin Alpin 5 SUV
(excellent in rainy conditions, still waiting for snow
)
(winter tires are mandatory in Lux when the weather conditions are winter like .... )

Jungle... Sorry to correct you, but in Luxembourg all weather tired are sufficient. You just have to have the M+S symbol. You don't need the 3PMSF symbol (that makes it a winter tire).
This is NOT the same in Germany where you do indeed need true winter tires.

Sorry, you're right, m+s is regulatory sufficient
but... many 'summer' tires even have the m+s symbol, I have it on my summer Conti SportContact. Tires without the alpine (mountain with snowflake) logo where never tested in snow conditions.

I know, I just wanted to point out that REAL Winter rated tires are not actually required.
I have Goodyear Duratracs on my D5. They have the M+S symbol, but no 3PMSF symbol. This means in Lux they would be accepted, but Germany do not accept them.
So… I ALSO have GG AT3s (for the winter).
Goodyear say that their tire does not have to be tested because it is an off road tire. Consequently, they say it works well in the snow, but they cannot put the 3PMSF logo on it as it hasn’t been rated.
The whole thing is too complicated!!

SFAIK, anyone can put M+S on their tyres. It's down to the tyre manufacturer as to whether they believe they are suitable for mud and snow conditions, but it's no guarantee of performance. 3PMSF (the Three Peaks Mountain Snowflake symbol) only appears on the sidewall where a tyre has passed certain performance criteria in a defined level of snow. That's what I'd be looking for if I wanted confidence in the product to perform in winter weather.

Thanks for all the replies and great to see the info that followed.
I get my D5 day after tomorrow (at last). Already bought a set of 5 (4 + the spare!) almost new 21' wheels, that will be my winter / snow set for the Alps.
Just need to buy the tyres and get them
all fitted.
