    Leaking windshield, again

    My 2017 Discovery windshield sprung a leak in 2020. The JLR dealer called a glass specialist to reseal. It’s been good for 3 years but now again leaking from the same place, above the center console and to the right side of the cabin.
    A call to Scarborough Land Rover in Maine suggested I take it to a local glass specialist as they don’t deal with windshield leaks. My extended warranty, of course, doesn’t cover known defects.
    The dealer cares not they lose my future business.Moving on…

    I had a 2017 discovery which had a leak when it was 12 months old, the dealer repaired it. Then just out of the UKs 3 year warranty it leaked again.

    The dealer couldn’t see the car for a week and it was pouring down so I got it repaired myself , which wasn’t a big expense. I was told It hadn’t been primed correctly so the glue didn’t sick.

    I’m thinking about buy another discovery but build quality does worry me ?

    I recall when the Disco was in for an engine replacement under LRs own extended warranty, I was supplied with a replacement vehicle until mine was repaired. It took about 8 weeks.

    When the garage was washing the car prior to giving it back, they discovered a windscreen leak what wasn’t there before. Despite me escalating the event to LR Chief Executive, they wouldn’t fork out £150 to have it resealed.

    WHY?

    Because they said they paid out for the car hire whilst my car was off the road when they didn’t have to, so didn’t feel obliged to pay for the resealing of the windscreen. I disagreed, but it got me no where.

    All this for £150! It was pathetic. A Chief Executives office that found this approach acceptable is totally unbelievable.

    So after buying 7 new LRs in my time, always having them serviced by LR, never penny pinching with any of them, purchasing their warranty, then I feel qualified to say buy LR at your peril, the after sales service is diabolical if anything goes wrong. I won’t go back once I am finished with the vehicle. I wouldn’t touch LR with a 10’ barge pole.

    I bought 5 from main dealers, always had them serviced and bought the extended warranty.
    Too many faults leaks and new engine at 27k.
    Appalling attitude from a Somerset main dealer every time.
    Walked away 2 years ago without any regrets just wish I had done so earlier.

    Wish I’d never purchased any of mine, truth be told. There were far more deserving makes to pick from. That said, I’ll run mine into the ground or the car will do that to me!

    At the moment I’ve been diverting money into property, so would prefer not to waste it on a lump of metal sitting in the driveway.

    I think it’s ridiculous forking out £70k plus for a new LR, costing me an arm and a leg to keep on the road and getting very little for it in a couple of years time in comparison to buying another flat or house, I’d then be able to rent it out and make money when I sell it.

    Over the next few months I’m looking to buy a car, at the moment the XC90 it the top of my list. I’m hoping after Christmas I might get a good deal I’m looking at a 21 reg.

    I love the Discovery my heart is saying the Discovery and my mind is saying XC90. My last 5 cars have been Landrover’s and the last three of them being brand new.

    The dealers were always good repairing my car until the warranty expired but LR weren’t interested I was pushing for an extended warranty with no joy.

    Perhaps the 21 year model with the new engine might be better, but I didn’t have problems with the engine it’s was leaking windscreen. Which was repaired and then failed a second time, Dripping water into my fuse box were the passenger glove box is.

    Then the just out of warranty the battery failed 😞 ( I’m sure water dripping into the fuse box didn’t help )

    I also had total cooling fluid loss due to a sharp damaged bracket ( which were it was located could have only been damaged in the factory) rubbing against the pipes which caused a leak.

    I had the Discovery for 4 years in total and due to Covid I changed to a Mercedes Vito van. I’m retiring next summer and looking for a retirement car which hopefully I’ll keep for 5 or 6 years.

    The Volvo XC90 is at the top of my list but I must be really stupid to even consider a Discovery, but when they are working they are a brilliant cars to drive.

    When I get my new car I will let the forum know Thumbs Up

    If you’re not needing the room, why not consider a Volvo or something else?

    The problem with LRs is cost of servicing and maintenance. What is it £450-£650 a A/B service? Also I had the front discs and pads done on the D5 and it was something like £1,400 from a main dealership.

    I has the same thing on SWMBOs Mazda and the main dealership charged £450. Says it all.

    Then there’s the statutory LR warranty at just over £1k, the car tax at £475 plus, the insurance that keeps on going up if you can get it covered. I’ve heard some owners are told to Censored off or alternatively they are wanting in excess of £2k.

    On top of that the used values are horrendous. People are loosing £10k plus a year. Rolling Eyes

    Time for head over heart tbh. The way it’s going you’d be cheaper divorcing the wife and paying maintenance for 5 kids. Rolling with laughter

    Volvo?

    I’m not sure an XC90 is the answer to replace your Discovery. I’ve had a 1999 S70 with the new AWD option. Perhaps the bugs weren’t worked out because I had to replace the converter box, at great expense, twice.
    Then the 2006 XC90 developed a bad transmission that needed replacement. So my experience with Volvo is bad engine/transmission design. Both cars were barely out of warranty.

    My D5 has been pretty flawless for 6 years - except for the leaking windshield, twice.
    You would think they could find a windshield fix after 6 model years and relocating the manufacturing plant to Slovakia. Guess it’s just a bad design.
    However, it’s been a brilliant car in that time.

    You’re right the Discovery is a brilliant car, I don’t need 7 seats but would like a big car. In the Uk the Discovery only comes as a 7 seater same as the Volvo.

    The Volvo doesn’t compare with the Discovery but is a very good car and will be cheaper to buy and run.
    I’m not looking until the new year I believe the premium used car prices are going down.

    Hopefully I might get a good deal

    The 2000vintage xc90 was a different beast to the current offering. For starters it had the xc70 engine which worked fine in the lighter xc70 but not in the xc90. It was a wallowing underpowered beast.
    The xc70 on the other hand was a much better more balanced car to drive (and tow with). Had two of them in succession and ran them for total of 10 years. Faultless apart from normal wear and tear replacements. Would have still had another but a head on crash in Italy ended our’s days in a Tuscany scrapyard. Insurers sent out a discovery 4 to tow our caravan home and the wife who took the brunt of the accident fell for the more comforting, secure feel, higher ride. The rest is history. But still plan to look at Volvo again after this d5 leaves our property sooner or later.

    The driver hight of the Discovery is great both car have lots of safety kit. I’ll have to test drive a XC90, the wife wants a Discovery she feels super safe in a Discovery.

    The new Toyota Land Cruiser looks good I’m not towing with the car put planning lots of driving holidays, hopefully going over to France.

    Once you owned and driven a Discovery it sets a high benchmark for your next car.

    Not sure about the new XC90 but my wife finds few cars to match the open foot space of the discovery on the passenger side.

    She finds the wheel arch often intrudes too much in the foot area on most cars. She cant sit perfectly straight as her left foot has to accommodate this bulge. That’s why she specifically wants to keep the discovery.

    I keep telling her she’s weird…..but knew exactly what she meant when I had to travel as a passenger in a Disco Sport some months ago. The wrap around seat bases exacerbate this.

    Yes you’re right the Discovery sets a high benchmark for other car to follow, year next year I’ll start test driving some cars.

    We haven’t no intention to tow a caravan but we still want a big car the amount of stuff we take on holiday is unbelievable.

    Holidaying in the UK you need to be prepared for all weathers plus the dog and all her stuff. I’ve had a couple of quotes for insurance the Volvo is about £650 and the Discovery same value is £1400 Sad . The way Range Rovers and Discovery’s are being stolen the price of insuring a Land Rover might be to high Big Cry
